Ceiling Fans with Style

Ceiling Fans in Different Styles

Ceiling fans are coming back into style. Words I’m not sure I thought I would write or say a few years back. I must say I have been converted to the functionality and style of fans - plus it doesn’t hurt that they cool things down on a sweltering day.

Summer is almost here so it may be time to consider upgrading existing fans or adding them to lower energy bills. The ceiling fans from Lamps Plus cover a wide range of popular features like remote control and energy efficient models. However, as a designer, I’m more concerned about how they look!

Tropical Style Ceiling Fans

Tropical style ceiling fans are chic in warmer climates and in veranda settings. I would probably use them when ceilings are high as the blades tend to be larger and may look “de trop” in smaller rooms. Also, tropical fans with lights create a casual atmosphere and allow you to enjoy the outdoors at night.

Ceiling Fans with Modern Style

Modern fans offer a sleek version of the old classic. The more aerodynamic styling makes them on the one hand disappear and on the other so aesthetically attractive you want to stare! Look how fabulous they look even when the decor is not minimalist.

Classic Style Ceiling Fans

The classic ceiling fan is timeless. I would, however, match the color of the fan to the ceiling as seen in the images above. If you want the look of a bygone era, this is the fan for you.

Retro Style Ceiling Fans

Retro style fans are so cool they’re hot. OK, seriously? Taking the look of an “old school” tabletop fan and converting it to a ceiling model is genius. I couldn’t love this design more and secretly wish my central air would falter so that I could buy one.

Ceiling fans aren't limited to the indoors either - a stylish outdoor ceiling fan is the perfect addition to a covered porch, patio, or sunroom.

Red Decor Colors for Summer Decorating

In my second installment of the Colors for Summer Decorating series, we will focus on scorching hot red decor. (We previously talked about yellow decor for summer.) It is so easy to incorporate bold summer reds into your seasonal decor routine, either in lighting, accessories or colorful outdoor furniture.  A pop of red is sure to inspire a sizzling backyard fiesta!

Red Outdoor Seating

As patriotic and American as apple pie, red decor accents signify those long hot days of summer.  Unlike sweet, cheerful yellow, mixing in bright, bold reds for the summer adds a 'wow' factor.  Whether planning one party or accessorizing for the entire season, mixing in red patio furniture, serving trays, potted plants and accent lighting brings a fun, festive feel to any space.  Check out how to incorporate bold red lighting, furniture and accessories in your home below - and don't forget an outdoor ceiling fan to keep cool.

The Modern Mix Design Trend

Modern Mix Living Room Design

The modern mix design trend reflects the way we live today. No longer are we saddled with having to create one “look,” rather it’s all about creating an eclectic mix of design elements to reflect our varied interests and taste. The notion of mixing many elements is a modern idea and Lamps Plus has devoted and entire section to lighting and furnishings that capture the modern mix home decorating style.

Modern Mix Furniture and Lighting

Much of this trend borrows from the 1960s and 1970s among others. I love the introduction of chrome seating and references to classic geometry. Additionally, picture lights that were once only seen in stuffy libraries have been spruced up, refinished in crisp tones and are now the rage in most any room of the house where you want dramatic, direct light.

Modern Mix Furniture and Mirrors

The modern mix design trend can also capture the golden age of Hollywood. Art Deco shapes have been revived, and like the lighting above, have been reinterpreted with new finishes and fresh details to make them relevant in today’s home.

Retro Inspired Furniture and Lighting

Lighting designs steeped in classic 1950s shapes are also back, having been transformed into truly modern light fixtures. I love how the mod 1950s style floor lamp above pops against the very modern color palette of cool gray. As long as your shapes, colors and scale are harmonious, you can’t go wrong.

Unique Color Ideas for Kids Rooms

Spring and summer are bursting with color, and it's the perfect time to embrace unique color ideas for kids rooms! I've created three different color schemes that are at once playful and sophisticated, so settle on a palette and get to work sprucing up your kids' spaces.

Yellow and Charcoal Colors for Kids Rooms

Yellow and gray or black isn't the most obvious color combo for a kid, at least it wasn't before Jenna Lyons created the oft-photographed nursery in her former Brooklyn townhouse. The black wall and striped ceiling just take some paint and patience to achieve. It works for girls too, as you can see in this refreshing bedroom spotted on an Apartment Therapy house tour. (Remember that butterfly wallpaper from that kitchen in Domino?) A fanciful upholstered headboard echoes the movement of the wings, and a subtly-patterned comforter adds even more interest. Interior images: Jenna Lyons; Apartment Therapy.

Unique Color Ideas for Kids Rooms - Turquoise and Green

Turquoise and green works just about anywhere. Both these bedrooms happen to be for girls, but with slight tweaks can be adapted for boys. Furniture with clean lines is paired with fabrics with strong graphics. Artwork and colorful table lamps add curves. Coral Blue Girls Room by Kelly Wearstler

Coral and turquoise is often seen in coastal decor, from guest rooms to dining rooms. Here, the hues are softened, and used in girls' bedrooms, making it easy to add in pale pink pieces you may already have (or that your daughter insists upon). Interior images: Visible Proof; Kelly Wearstler.

Design Ideas for a Backyard Oasis

Beach Oasis

I think summer is my favorite season of all.

Growing up, we summered every year on Cape Cod. We would walk along the coastline.....watching the sailboats drift by in the distance, listening to the squawk of the seagulls and watching the lobster buoys bob up and down with the drifting waves.

It was an oasis.

A true getaway.

I can still see the winding gravel road leading to the beach and its endless rows of jetties. When you rounded the bend.....you could hear the roar of the waves crashing against the shore and smell the salt air.

That winding road always took us away from the cares of everyday life......

....and to the beginning of a summer oasis.

Miles from the beach and looking to create an oasis?  Here's a few design ideas to create a getaway in your own back yard.

Cover Patio With Wicker Furniture

1.  Create a retreat

Create a retreat of your own with natural fibers and textures.

Add a natural fiber outdoor rug to ground your space and compliment it with stylish outdoor seating with texture like a set of rattan chairs or a reclining chaise lounge.

Relax with a good book and a cool glass of lemonade on a lazy summer afternoon.

Colorful Outdoor Space

2.  Add soothing colors

Nothing says summer like lemon and sherbet.

Create an oasis with fun pops of color using indoor/outdoor rugs and patterned pillows.

Light the way with colorful LED party lights or paper lanterns.

A colorful back porch is perfect for homemade ice cream while the crickets chirp as the sun sets in the sky.

A Tented Oasis

3.  Relax under the stars.

Why not spend a lazy summer night with your guests under the stars?

Use a tent or a gazebo to create a backyard oasis, or on a clear night bring a table out under a canopy of trees.

Create a welcoming oasis with indoor/outdoor fabrics and pillows or a cozy throw.

Nibble on dessert by the light of decorative lanterns amidst the laughter of friends.

Patio With Pops of Yellow

This summer.....as the days get longer and the balmy summer breezes float in....take time to enjoy every moment.

Relax and sip lemonade or make homemade ice cream or listen to the crickets chirping.

With a few simple steps, you can create a backyard oasis of your own.....

.....the perfect place to relish the lazy days of summer.

Easy Budget Decorating Ideas

Well-Designed Bookshelves on a BudgetUnless you've just won the mega-millions lottery, one factor will always be a consideration when designing your space: budget. However, great expense doesn't guarantee great taste, and these easy budget decorating ideas will be your best friend for a stylish and livable home.

Much beauty can be created without much money; and in fact working with less forces you to think more carefully about what you value most. The result is a considered, cultivated interior that will be your retreat from the busy outside world.

Headboard Decorating IdeasCall on the concept of 'one' when you're working on a strict budget. This simple approach streamlines and de-stresses the process as well as keeps your spending in check. Setting a rule for one color throughout a room—whether that means turning your book spines inwards for a cohesive (and totally free!) library look, or sticking with a single hue for all your kitchen implements—ensures you're less likely to make impulse buys that aren't within your scheme.

Similarly, while a formal headboard has its time and place, a single large wall hanging plays the same role as a focal point and requires considerably less from your budget.

Large Wall Art on a Budget

When it comes to art, a gallery wall with multiple framed pieces does look terrific, but the cost of assembling and hanging adds up quickly. Conversely, one large painting, a black and white photo, or a stunning piece of wall art makes an impact over a sofa or entryway console; and often the canvas is striking enough that you don't have to frame it at all.

The lesson? When you're working with budget decorating, think about all the ways you can make a strong statement with just one of something—and choose the best of that one that you can afford!

Table Lamp Trends

Table Lamp Trends

Table lamp trends can be as wide-ranging as fashion. What makes following this trend is that table lamps are much more practical than clothes and can be moved around the house and used in many applications.

One day an on-trend lamp can act as a chic bedside table lamp and the next it is modern desk lamp! Here are some of the most current trends in table lamps.

Geometric Lamps

1. George Kovacs Square Shade Chrome Table Lamp

To me, geometric lamps are cerebral. Not only beautiful, they follow a more mathematical approach to enhancing a room. Strong geometry is important to any space and you may wish to introduce this form of lighting to rooms that lack architectural pizazz.

Industrial Style Table Lamp Trend

2. Feiss Urban Renewal Antique Forged Iron Desk Lamp

Industrial lamps are probably the hottest trend now. Part Steampunk, part Neo-Industrial Revolution, these lamps offer a specific look that works well in lofts, urban interiors as well as old-school country houses. It’s a nod to the past with modern aesthetic merit.

Emerald Green Table Lamps

3. Arteriors Home Roma Emerald Cased Glass Table Lamp (currently unavailable)

Emerald is the darling hue du jour. Thus, incorporating this bold green in your home shows your understanding of current design trends. Adding an emerald table lamp is also an easy an inexpensive way to add a pop of color, especially if you tend to like neutrals and white.

Distressed Table Lamps

4. Jamie Young Large Steampunk Table Lamp 5. Hammered Bronze Vase Table Lamp

Distressed lighting is also a popular table lamp trend. While it could be considered part industrial, these table lamps work better in a more polished space. While the forms are graceful, the patina is worn and warm.

Before buying one, however, be sure to do some research as to what size you need to really make a difference. As for what looks best, there are a ton of choices. I've pulled together six ceiling fan styles.

Bathroom Lighting To Update Your Space

$

One of the quickest and most effective updates you can do to update your decor is to install new lighting.  This minor change can have a major impact on a sometimes mundane, forgotten space.  Bathrooms both small and large can really benefit from installing unique ceiling lighting.  Here we explore new ways to install bathroom lighting to update your space.

Vintage Bathroom Lighting To Update Your Space

Above we see some beautiful vintage inspired wall sconces and chandeliers that bring a special twinkle to the décor of the bathroom.

Industrial Bathroom Lighting To Update Your Space

Installing industrial light fixtures in beautiful metals can really add a cool pop to your bathroom space.  Both vintage as well as industrial lights look great in vintage style bathrooms, but can be translated to just many different spaces as long as they have an underlying color or material similarity.

Recessed Bathroom Lighting To Update Your Space

For a more traditional look in the bathroom, consider installing recessed lighting.  Adding recessed lighting to your bathroom brings a new dimension of light to the room, and the ambient lighting can work wonders for those gazing into the mirror. The lighting above is concealed by the crown molding (left) and the mirror (right) for a subtle wash of light in the room.

Update Your Bathroom with a Chandelier

While traditional in concept, chandeliers in the bathroom are not terribly traditional.  However, if you have a high enough ceiling and a rectangular shaped bathroom, a sparkling crystal chandelier can have a stunning effect.

Funky Bathroom Lighting To Update Your Space

For those of you readers who are like me, adding a funky touch to your bathroom might be just the thing you are looking for to make a powder room or master bathroom pop.  Adding fun lighting elements like mini pendant lights in diverse colors and materials makes the room feel fun and special.  Clustering paper lanterns over the vanity is a gorgeous option for someone looking for a funky yet organic way to update their bathroom lighting.

Leather Home Decor Accents

Last fall, fashion saw a move towards mixed materials of all kinds, with a special emphasis on leather. I for one bought into it big time: a cotton trench with leather sleeves, hammered jewelry that incorporated leather ties, a silk dress with leather trim. Now I'm excited to see leather home decor accents rising in popularity!

Leather Furniture Lighting and Decor

Of course leather has always been a mainstay for interiors. However this look focuses less on items upholstered entirely in the material and more on subtle accents, making it a more affordable trend in which to dabble. Look for hides in lighter shades like camel and sienna on home furnishings, all types of lighting, storage, and more.

Even a single piece goes a long way—and nothing can beat the luxe yet earthy texture that leather home decor accents bring!

Pendant Lights in a Living Room

You can make a space feel modern, warm, eclectic, classic or industrial by the careful selection of statement-making pendant lights. I've long believed that lighting is what gives a room its personality. And not just by the ambiance it gives off, but the light itself says a lot about your design style.

Lately I've been loving the look of pendant lights:

Whether hung over a dining table, coffee table, at a kitchen island or even in a bedroom, pendants will also do double duty for you - give you the light you need and the style you want.

Here is a selection of some of my current favorite pendant lights!

Blush Colored Accents for the Home

Are you feeling romantic? Perhaps flirty? Blush colored accents in your home and in your wardrobe will do the trick. Not everybody goes for bold and colorful when it comes to spring and summer decorating and fashion, so blush could be your new “go to color.”

Blush Colored Fashion

Because blush is so delicate it should be paired with other nudes and neutrals to have an ethereal affect. There is one exception, and that is black. Black will anchor blush and be the perfect counterpoint. I love blush as a bedroom color scheme. Whether it’s blush-colored curtains or soft pink bedside lamps, it will create a calming respite from a crazy world outside.

Another design idea for blush is using it in your bathroom or closet. If you are lucky enough to have a walk in, try painting the walls blush and adding a chandelier with crystals.

Blush Hued Lifestyle Pictures

Blush is also the perfect color for decorating your home for baby showers, weddings and sweet sixteen parties. It’s more sophisticated than pink and certainly much easier on the eye. Generally, I’m a fan and think you will be too.

Home Decorating Ideas with Vacation Memorabilia

Home Decorating Ideas with Vacation Memorailia

Whether it's a long weekend or an extended trip, the lazy days of a holiday must eventually come to an end. With the end often comes a disorganized pile of vacation memorabilia, as well as the post-vacation blues. It's normal to feel nostalgic for memories of vacation as you transition back to daily life, and there are steps you can take to ease the process. Most importantly, don't rush to get over the experience. Savor it by incorporating your favorite souvenirs into your decor with these home decorating ideas!

Home Decorating Ideas with Maps

Maps offer perhaps the best opportunity to work a piece of your travels into your interior design. Frame a map of your most recent destination as a piece of wall art; find a flea market while you're on a road trip and stock up on old atlases to use as book covers; matte your wedding photos with a map of the city where you took your honeymoon. Not only are maps aesthetically pleasing, they're easy to carry in your luggage and they make for great conversation pieces when you display them back home. As well, they're a fun way to have active conversations with your kids about the sites and locations you visited together.

Home Decorating Ideas with Seashells

If you're a collector, vacation memorabilia is a terrific excuse to indulge your pack-rat impulse, but how many times have those special finds ended up hidden in a closet once your bags are unpacked? Instead, use these home decorating ideas to put these physical reminders of your travels on display. Think hotel key cards, matchbooks from favorite restaurants, shells, pebbles, and rotate them in serving bowls, jars, or vases on your coffee table or nightstand.

When you look at them, you'll be able to heed Dr. Seuss's great advice: "Don't cry because it's oversmile because it happened." He may not have had the post-vacation blues in mind when he said those words, but they certainly apply nonetheless!

The Chevron Pattern in Home Decor

Chevron Pattern in Home Decor

The chevron pattern is a classic home decor style that has been around for ages, especially in the design of elegant hardwood floors. The more bold version has really come into its own in the past decade and can add some zip to any room.

It’s easy to control how strong the pattern will appear based on the size and color you choose. One great thing to know, however, is that it looks great from floor to ceiling and everywhere in-between.

Chevron Pattern Home Decor Accessories

1. Chevron Ikat Canvas Down Throw Pillow 2. Chevron Black and White Zig Zag Wingback Accent Chair

The chevron pattern is not meek so to invest in tiling or painting a floor in that style may be too risky. No worries, soft furnishings like pillows or furniture fabrics are a great option. A fun project would be to paint a chevron design on the plain wooden frame of an accent mirror to match the color scheme of a bedroom or bath.

Cheerful Chevron Pattern Home Decor

3. Black Finish Mini Pendant 4. Zig Zag Giclee Shade

Chevron can also be found in lighting! An easy and inexpensive way to update lighting would be to swap out an old shade for a chevron zig zag styled version. Whether a pendant in the kitchen or on dining room fixture, the chevron will certainly add pizzazz to your home decor.

Sophisticated Bedroom with Chevron Table Lamp

5. Clarendon ZigZag Hand-Painted Wood Table Lamp

Contemporary table lamps can also exhibit an exotic look when decorated with a chevron pattern. Thoroughly modern, this lamp would look amazing in a living room or on a night stand.

Blue Decor Accents for Summer

For my final installment of the Colors for Summer Decorating series we descend upon bold yet tranquil blue decor. (We've previously talked about yellow decor and red decor.) Using Modern Pastel Colors in Home Decor

Using Modern Pastel Colors in Home Decor

I've always had a soft spot for pastel colors in home decor, especially at this time of year. There's something uniquely invigorating about a subtle yet refreshing wash of sky, a brush of peach, or a hint of mint. This years batch of pastels is particularly appealing. They're clean and modern, without an ounce of sticky-sweetness in sight. The secret to pastels is that a little goes a long way—which makes pastel table lamps the perfect way to bring the trend home.

Modern Pastel Table Lamps

Ceramic pastel table lamps in solid shades offer easy and budget-friendly options for trying out pastel colors in your home decor. Look for interesting shapes and textures to keep the effect fresh, not fussy; a periwinkle platform base offers crisp contrast, while a blush take on the Civitia lamp livens up a traditional shape. And if you usually shy away from color, give modern pastels from the subdued end of the spectrum a try. After all, 'butterscotch' is just a neutral with tastier name!

Farmhouse Post Racks Kitchen Storage

We love the casual boho vibe of this kitchen, which almost has the feel of a mud/garden room with its country sink, farmhouse work table, and kilim rugs. Note the wire pot rack overhead. Kitchen Storage Island

This kitchen blends country and contemporary for a fresh finish. The natural wood and stone work beautifully with the white dishes, pendant light, and countertop. It looks to us that the island was added after the fact. Rather than being a built-in extension of the sleek kitchen cabinetry, it's a freestanding piece with rugged appeal. This kitchen has a slightly moody vibe thanks to the mix of dark finishes accenting the gray base tones.
