A historic town might not be where you'd think to look for fresh interior color combinations - but think again! Seaside towns can be quaint, or even elegantly upscale, but it's not often that New England inns channel a boutique hotel vibe. Until now.
Boston-based interior designer Rachel Reider undertook a total redo of the Attwater Hotel in Newport, RI last year. She transformed all 12 guest rooms as well as the public spaces, into a breezy haven. Drawing on nautical elements, like shades of blue from ocean to sky, grommets, rope, and coral, Reider infuses the coastal theme with punchy color and geometric prints. Reider starts with a neutral base of grudge and mustard, then pairs it with a seaworthy turquoise. The barn door harkens back to the New England vernacular, while the ikat print pillows hint at global adventure. Photo by Rare Brick.

In this guest room, Reider turns the classic preppy palette of navy and coral on its end with an infusion of chartreuse to create this fresh interior color combination that's definitely unexpected. She expertly blends the geometric (Greek keys and chevrons) with funky ethnic flair (the headboard pattern) and the traditional (floral chair). A neutral metallic table lamp provides a soothing contrast. Photo by Rare Brick.
