There is nothing more exotic and exciting than the multicultural design inspiration to be found within the various travel destinations of Asia. I have selected India and China as two fabulous examples. These ancient cultures are rich in history and filled with amazing artisans. From carving and textiles to painting and architecture, there is a feast for the senses.
India strikes an interesting pose. This design aesthetic is thoroughly unique combining stunning local, Moorish and Colonial British elements into the soup. India’s love of color and pattern is world-famous and challenges our traditional notions of design. Even when modern Indian interiors are monochromatic, one can usually eye an intricate wall mirror or finely punched hanging lantern for indoor or outdoor use.
India is the type of country that can unfold in layers and offer new design ideas around every corner. Just observing how a turban or sari is wrapped can be the catalyst for upholstery or window treatment. It’s just endless fabulosity.

China is another travel destination to find inspiration, albeit in a very different way. My impression is that the China we are so fascinated by is the “Old China,” the pre-revolution china that seemed as forbidden as the Forbidden City. There tends to be more nuance and control to Chinese design versus the earthy Indian look above.
Contemporary Chinese interiors are a marvelous combination of simple, almost disappearing furniture as the backdrop to intricate antiques such as screens, sculptures, inlaid cabinetry or textiles. This clean aesthetic can work beautifully in both modern or traditional homes.
