"Tis the season for hot chocolate and jingle bells and mini marshmallows and brown paper packages tied up with bows.....

....and holiday decorating with gold and silver.

Inspired by this brilliant image from Architectural Digest featuring the work of Yifat Oren, this year Christmas at the farmhouse is all about the texture and sheen of metallics.

I'm decking the halls with glitter and glimmer and pops of silver....topped off with hints of gold.

And here's my favorite tips for decorating with these precious metals.

1.  Layer With Unexpected Textures

This swagged staircase from bhg contrasts the texture of a sisal rug with the freshness of greenery and the sparkle of silver and gold.

The silver accents are subtle....yet add the right amount of glitter and shimmer to make this staircase a showpiece.

Silver home accessories are also used  in the grouping of trees on the side table.

2.  Create a Neutral Pallet

Nothing sets off silver and gold like the simplicity of white....as in this simple Christmas vignette from bhg.

From the white slipcovers at the table to the apothecary jars filled with cookies and candies....each white element provides the perfect backdrop for gold and silver to take center stage.

Decorate under the tree with a neutral color scheme featuring brown packing paper and a single silver monogram.

3.  Don't Forget the Front Door

Greet your guest with a little sparkle and shine....like this wreath created by Martha Stewart.

Tuck fresh greens into a wreath form and top it off with silver ornaments in a variety of sizes.

Finish it off with a silver bow and metallic accents.

4.  Use Ornaments as Accents

Ornaments aren't just for the tree anymore.

Create a shimmering swag with this simple garland from bhg that features gold ornaments tied onto a simple chocolate ribbon.

Then tuck ornaments into glass compotes filled with pine cones for the perfect mantel display.

Jingle bell season is almost upon us and soon the packages will be tied with bows and placed underneath the Christmas tree.

Have fun this season and remember that....

.....decking the halls with gold and silver is sure to make your holiday decorating shine.
