For the month of January we're going back to basics with home lighting, revisiting the guidelines for illuminating your space. By putting some thought into the subject now and making a few strategic changes, you'll maximize both function and aesthetics for the rest of the year. Last week we talked about how to refresh your kitchen; now lets explore a home decor refresh with living room lighting basics.
Approach your living room lighting as you would getting dressed to go outdoors: it's all about layering. If you have an existing electrical socket for an overhead fixture, consider a large chandelier or pendant light to highlight a central area such as a sofa or coffee table. This piece will not only provide general background lighting, it will anchor the room around a central conversation zone.
Floor lamps are the second layer to consider. The larger, heavier ones play the role of ambient lighting, but light and flexible swing-arm floor lamps can serve as portable task lamps for reading and other activities. Finally, table lamps and other accent lamps highlight home decor elements on bookshelves, consoles, and end tables—they're like the small accessories in your lighting outfit. Have fun with them and use them make creative statements to express your style!
Up next week, we'll talk about how to create a warm and soft retreat with lighting in the bedroom. Stay tuned!
