Winter is the perfect time of year to embrace cozy library design. Wood paneled walls, masses of books and a roaring fire are how many of us like to live while winter winds blow and snow softly falls.
The images I find on Belgian Pearls always make me feel warm and fuzzy. There is something about Belgian design that speaks to me and the great design looks we can create during the winter months.
You need not have a dedicated library to create a library. A new trend is to convert infrequently used dining rooms into a functional library or simply add shelving in the living room for a similar look.
Lighting is key in library design! Floor lamps provide the perfect light for reading and wall sconces will cast a warm glow against books and art.
A new trend is to mount picture lights at the top of bookshelves to illuminate entire walls. While specialized light can create a romantic environment, remember that libraries tend to be places to work and contemplate, so make sure you also have ceiling lighting.
Furniture is also critical to a successful library design. Make sure you have a comfortable chair for reading, a desk for working and ample accent tables for the basics like candles, books and drinks.
If you have tall bookshelves I would suggest getting a folding ladder like in the lower right image. Not only will they allow you to reach high shelves, they look great when accessorized.
