This past August, Sunset put on its annual Idea House and Lamps Plus was very excited to be a part of that project by providing much of the lighting.
The main criteria for the location of the Sunset Idea House is that the location must capture the “spirit of the West.” So it should come as no surprise that the chosen location was Denver. The combination of Denver’s outdoorsy culture and the booming real estate market made it a natural choice.
The location is a 1954 single level ranch home that was transformed by architect Jonas Dicaprio of Design Platform and interior designer Megan Hudacky of cky Designs. The home, after extensive renovations, is now a three-level, energy efficient modern home with 5 bedrooms and 5.5 baths.
The interiors are a modernized version of midcentury modern with open-plan living and screens for dividing spaces; Hudacky’s design also honored the home’s midcentury roots throughout the home.
The color palette throughout the home is fairly neutral, punctuated with bold splashes of color like ocean blue, teal, yellow, pink and orange.
Hudacky broke with convention, and instead of designing a marble kitchen with subway tile went with a bold blue and teal geometric tile on the floor and the backsplash that clearly delineates the kitchen area from the rest of the space.
Instead of having the upper cabinets match the lower, she went with a highly polished bronze.
A series of Possini Euro's white Ponder pendants hang over the island, creating visual balance.
The living room’s furniture is a mix of modern and midcentury and the neutral color palette is broken up with punches of yellow and teal. Instead of using table lamps on the side tables, Hudacky opted for energy-efficient Trumpet floor lamps on either side of the sofa.
Hudacky once again brightens up the neutral colors in a bedroom with blue. There weren’t a lot of options for where to place the bed in the room, so it was positioned directly in front of large windows.
Wall to wall curtains help to both anchor and soften the room. A pair of Color Plus Wexler table lamps in Humble Gold on top of matching side tables add visual balance to the room.
A sunburst mirror and a Jonathan Adler Rio sconce in brass help carry the mod feeling into the powder room.
It’s hard to believe that this bedroom is on the garden level! Large light wells were put into place during the remodel, which allows natural light to flood the space.
Splashes of pink and orange liven up the calming palette of pewter gray.
Another Wexler table lamp (this time in winter white) with a gray Dupioni silk drum shade sits on the bedside table.
Hudacky transformed a smaller bedroom into a lounge with two midcentury modern style lounge chairs with, you guessed it, splashes of teal brought in by decorative pillows.
A sputnik-inspired flush mount fixture in brass adds to the retro vibe.
The lounge also has these industrial-inspired sconces with an exposed filament bulb mounted inside the bookcase.
The playroom features the same sputnik-style brass fixture seen in the lounge which works beautifully with the spunky, playful design of the room that is awash in shades of pink, purple, orange and red.
A long, sinuous sectional anchors the design of the media room that is punctuated by splashes of orange, brown, ochre and teal. A series of three paintings adorn the wall and are spotlighted by three white Willa pendants from Possini Euro. The pendants are a great alternative to traditional track lighting or recessed spot lights for highlighting objects like artwork.
The home In Denver's Hilltop neighborhood is now on the market for $1,995,000 -- unfurnished. You can easily bring the look of the Sunset Idea House into your home through similar use of space and color and, of course, stylish lighting from Lamps Plus!
