Enhance Your Home Design With Pendant Lighting

Pendant Lights

Pendant lighting can enhance every room in the house. The stylish design blog, Eclecchic, has some wonderful examples of how to achieve a designer look by incorporating mini pendant lighting designs in a variety of applications.

The great thing about pendants are that they work with every aesthetic. From modern to country, these gems certainly light it up.

Kitchen Lighting

1. Parker Place Solid Brushed Steel 8" Wide Mini Pendant Light, 2. Roomstylers Globe White Glass Pendant Light

Some obvious spots for pendants still tend to be in the kitchen. Whether you need better task lighting over an island or some brighter light source over a sink, pendants can truly come to the rescue. While function is always key, it will never hurt to look for something cute. Here are some great options whether you are drawn to classic farm house or 70’s inspired glam.

Colorful Lighting

3. Possini Euro Arata Red Art Glass LED Mini Pendant Light

Sometimes, pendant lighting can simply be playful and not need to perform like a workhorse in your home design. Whimsical lighting will always be a conversation starter and color is the best way to get there. You can infuse color not only through blown glass, but painted metal can look very cute in a rustic room design.

Also, consider thinking outside the box with pendant placement. Grouped together over a bar or in a great room could be super cool.

Contemporary Pendant Lights

4. Bryden White LED Mini Pendant Light 5. Jonathan Adler Havana Nickel-White Pendant Chandelier

Another trend that has caught on is the use of pendant lighting as your beside or bedroom lighting. If you are challenged with a lack of space and don’t have room for nightstands and lamps, consider hanging pendants from the ceiling.

Modern pendants are sleek, sexy and can create a mod mid-century feel in your bedroom if you go for cool white.

Home Decorating With Wall Mirrors for Winter Style

Winter Style DecoratingThere is something so beautiful about wall mirrors when it comes to achieving a winter style in your home. Mirrors and mirrored furniture have an icy, sultry feel that perfectly encapsulates the snowy decorating season.

In the above image from Desire to Inspire, you see the beautiful marble veining from the floors reflecting and dancing across the mirrored sink vanity. Antique style mirrors add sophisticated detail to any room.

Let's take a look at some beautiful images below from Elle Decor that may just inspire you to bring some mirrored pieces into your winter decor.

Mirrored Living Room

Like in the image above, the addition of mirrored accent furniture is a very subtle change, but makes all the difference in any room.

The glint and shine that the delicate room divider adds to an otherwise empty corner anchors the sitting area and opens up the space even further. And while a darker, solid side table might flatten the lightness of the room divider, the layering of an additional mirrored piece blends perfectly.

As you can see, they don't compete but rather compliment each other as well as the rest of the fun furniture in the room.

Mirrored Dining Room

In this gorgeous dining room, the mirrored surfaces take center stage. The antiquing of the mirror on the mantle has a feel that so perfectly signifies a snowy, wintry home decorating season. And when you have a room as large as this, you can take risks with scale and grandeur as they did by layering mirror atop mirror as well as featuring a mirrored dining table.

The addition of patterns, varying textures and layering turns this big room into a fun-filled, interesting space.

Mirrored Bathroom

A typical installation for a winter-style wall mirror is the bathroom. Here you can go from a simple vanity mirror to a room full of mirrored surfaces. As long as you flex your taste and editing muscles, you can pretty much let you imagination run wild.

I love this image above because it's simplistic but very detailed and chic. Choosing bathroom mirrors with luxury styling is a great way to have fun with detailing.

Mirrored Accent Desk

This beautiful bedroom vignette serves double duty as a mirrored work desk and a nightstand. The traditional lines of this desk almost make it disappear against the bold patterns and colors that surround the it. This is a useful tactic when using a larger piece that you don't want to feel overbearing. The reflecting light and bright white base remind me of the sun rising on a beautiful winter morning.

In short, romantic bedroom furniture must include a mirrored dresser.

Mudroom Organizing Ideas

mudroom-organizing-ideas-how-to

I'm in the process of creating a space.....

.....where all the muddy boots go to live.

You know....where they can party it up with the umbrellas and the scarves and mittens.....just like this simple mudroom from Country Living.

Creating space for a mudroom is easier than you think...all you need is a little inspiration and organization.

So if you have a little mud at your house and you're trying to organize it all like me....

....here's a few mudroom organizing ideas.

mudroom-organizing-ideas

1.  Rethink your existing spaces

Here's a brilliant idea from Canadian House and Home to transform an armoire into a mini mudroom.

Simply transform a cabinet or bookcase into a functioning space to house boots and coats and hats.

Hang an organizer from the rod inside the cabinet to easily store mittens and scarves.

mudroom-organizing-ideas-back-door2.  Add a place to sit

This mini mudroom recently featured in Country Living, creates a welcoming pace to take off boots and shoes.

Create a similar look with a rustic bench and a row of hooks on the wall.

Finish the space with an umbrella stand and metal trays to hold muddy boots.

organize-a-mudroom-shelving

3.  Make it work for your family

A fully stocked mudroom like this one from This Old House....keeps the mud at a minimum.

Add a drying rack for scarves and mittens and stacks of towels to dry off all the wet.

Extra seating like these fun chairs help keep the mudroom organized and easily accommodates a busy family.

mudroom-organizing-ideas-built-ins

4.  Build it in

If you have the space....built-in cubbies are a perfect mudroom organizing idea.....like these built-ins from This Old House.

Add a rack for each person in the family and even an individual space for boots and shoes.

Then add a large basket or stand to hold sports equipment and a smaller one for umbrellas.

As winter rears its frosty head....snowy days are here. Muddy boots and scarves and mittens can be a full-time job. Having a place to put them all.....

....priceless. :)

Urban Rustic Interiors

While urban rustic interior design may not be an official design style, it’s a look that is worth getting to know.

The New Victorian Ruralist always seems to capture this haunting aesthetic of the slightly worn interior with a modern twist. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a form of Shabby Chic. Years have past since it was all the rage, however it’s extreme femininity doesn’t translate well to current taste and urban sensibilities.

Antique Style Rooms

Many designers will tell you that one need not follow any rules when it comes to design, and that breaking the rules is just fine. That may be, however, good design in a room is really a delicate balancing act.

It’s truly interesting that these rooms have crumbling walls, but the spaces would simply look derelict if it were not for the counter weight of beautiful but simple linen, antiques and some more industrial and modern accessories and lighting.

Modern Lights

Like the rooms in the second images, this photo further amps up the chic in these rustic interiors. I’m mad for modern floor lamps juxtaposed against rough hewn walls and further balanced with natural stools, chairs and soft furnishings.

You can also achieve these lighting schemes with a variety of clip on light styles that offer a similar look. The urban rustic interior can look amazing in loft style homes as well. The use of metal be it exposed duct work or conduit compliments soft fabrics and natural woods extremely well.

 Neon-Chevron-Wallpaper-Yellow-Design

Neon has been relevant in fashion for a bit and neon signs are all the rage in interiors, but it's finally time to embrace neon in actual furniture and accessory design.

These vibrant colors are so fun and versatile, and while they are not for everyone, the way neon is being used in interior design today is cool, chic and approachable enough that it is easy to fall in love with.

Let's explore some fantastic ways to incorporate bright neon interior design into your home below.

 Neon-Pink-Yellow-Accent-Stools-DIY-Design

All of these gorgeous images in this blog post from Easy Living and Architecture Art Design will deomonstrate how to use neon in both dominant and complimentary ways.

The above images show how accent stools can be updated in fun neon colors and add a cool twist to any interior decor.  If you don't want to go all the way with a bright stool color, you can create a DIY project and dip just the bottom of the legs of a white stool in fun neon accent colors.

Color-Block-Neon-Sherbet-Kitchen-Design

This neon color blocked kitchen takes huge cues from fashion trends. Both the use of complimentary neon colors as well as the color blocking have had major success in the fashion world and are starting to work their way into interior design.

This almost Jetson-feeling retro inspired kitchen is a great place to experiment with neon versions of rainbow sherbet inspired color blocking.

Neon-Yellow-Pink-Green-Library-Design

This cool library features a very classic paint application on the walls and built-ins, but the addition of the neon coffee table, art and accessories make this room feel fun and fresh. A cool green task lamp design provides a modern edge, which is mirrored in the playfulness of this library. And who doesn't love a light-up neon hot pink pig doorstopper???

Neon-Yellow-Tile-Fireplace-Design

The fireplace above is inside a traditional home, and surrounded by traditional flooring, accessories and furniture. However, the addition of neon yellow tile inside the fireplace elevates this space from pretty to a chic, modern and interesting space.

The neon tile is not overwhelming, but rather it helps to inject fun and a bit of playful whimsy into the space.

Neon-Pink-Lighting-Light-LED

If the images before seem too extreme of a design decision for you to make at this time, consider the above interpretation. The beautifully subtle glow of the neon pink light is fresh and exciting.

Lean a large neon tube against the wall of consider installing a single strip of led lights. There are many types of led under cabinet lighting options in neon hues that will give off a fun, modern vibe without being a too blatant application.

What do you think of bring neon in modern interior design?  Will you go ahead and explore with neon in your own home?

Winter Lake House Design

Lake House Design

Winter lake house design is a no-fuss, chic approach to decorating. Not only does it look good in the literal lake house, but also works in the mountains and even at the beach.

"No fuss" can also mean “not expensive” in my book. As long as there is a good amount of cozy throws, ticking (striped) fabric, wood and rustic glass you should be set. Savvy Home blog had a terrific spread of a homes that truly capture this look in all its glory.

Rustic Interior Design

As with most getaways, your house design plan should be easy and easy to clean. Usually there is a sea of mud, leaves and sand all over the place so make sure the floors are easy to clean and nothing is too precious.

Antiques can look good in these homes, but make sure they are not priceless...flea market finds are perfect.

Also, a clean white palette is a great backdrop on which to decorate. Great fabrics and rich woods will pop.

Cabin Decor

This clean color scheme looks crisp in summer and brightens-up a winter space and is a surprisingly cool winter white. I would pair many white blankets and bedding as they have done in these images. Can’t you see it working for most seasons?

When it comes to keeping things bright, lighting should speak to the nature that surrounds you. Think about interesting bedroom lighting ideas that incorporate textural paper lanterns as well as wrought iron and glass table lamps.

Welcome Guests Using Impressive Foyer Lighting

Is there anything more inviting than being welcomed by a beautiful foyer the moment you walk into someone’s home?! Impressive foyer lighting is what makes it come alive and helps create an ambiance for guests. Your entryway is a representation of you and your home style.

Whether you prefer a traditional chandelier with glowing crystal or if a contemporary pendant lamp is more your style, look at these ideas to make your foyer a stunning first impression with these inspiring lighting ideas.

Impressive Foyer Lighting

How to choose the right foyer lighting for high and low ceilings.

Determining the size of your entryway and whether it opens to other rooms will be simple ways to assess the right lighting. If your front door features wall lights or windows beside the door then you could transom windows above the door like this room from Group 3 Designs above. A dramatic pendant light could be fitting.

In larger foyers multiple lighting options, such as a table lamp or flanking wall sconces around a mirror. In smaller foyers that borrow light from an adjoining living room or hallway, you may only need close to ceiling lights, like the example below which has plenty of sparkle to attract the eye without being overbearing.

Crystal Ceiling Light

Eurofase Crystal Diamond Square Trim

Create a stir with dramatic foyer lighting.

If you’re looking for a way to create a more dramatic entrance to your home, look to lighting and finishes that work together to create a stunning display of character.

This foyer by Cindy Ray Interiors uses mother of pearl wallpaper and silver leaf wallpaper on the ceiling to play up the drama of this unique foyer. Indirect and recessed lighting show off the seating alcoves while an eye-catching chandelier takes center stage.

With contrasting paint colors, wallpaper and textiles you will be surprised what beautiful interiors you can create!

Crystal Foyer Lighting

The next time you welcome guests into your home, rest assure that you have put inspiring thought into your foyer and selected impressive foyer lighting designs.

While you may not realize it, the foyer is the first place your guests see and the last when leaving your home. Create an ambiance that is memorable with lighting, and one that shows off your hospitality in the best way possible.

Contemporary Stools With Designer Style

Stylish Stools

Most homes need and use stools. However, have you ever asked yourself if you have stylish stools? Just because something is utilitarian, doesn’t mean it needs to be drab.

Stools can look chic and serve many functions. Most of us think about using stools at a counter, but a great stool can also become a decorative coffee table and side table if the height is right. Contemporary barstools may be too high for a table application but they too can look fab.

Metal Stools

1. Set of 2 Zuo Modern Marius Gunmetal Counter Stools

I found some great pictures of stools in The Design Files and thought they sum up some of the hottest looks in stools today. Industrial stools are all the rage and a great example of contemporary bar stools perfect for a kitchen bar.

This trend is still going strong and I’m glad. These stools are hearty and have the look found in many trendy restaurants.

Reclaimed Wood Furniture

2. Jamie Young Americana Metal and Wood Stool (currently unavailable)

Along with metal being extremely popular, reclaimed wood furniture is hot. The look these days is to combine rough hewn wood with metal and finally stools are getting in the act.

The juxtaposition and combination of these materials has the “going green” look and can work in both modern and traditional spaces.

Contemporary Kitchen Stools

3. American Heritage Classic Bar Stool

If you want timeless, go for a trusty black stool. Like the reclaimed stool, the black stool goes with every style kitchen. It’s essentially the foolproof stool!

Artisan Furniture

4. Round Bronze Hammered Metal Stool

To me, the architectural stool is more like a small miracle. Yes, these stools can be used for seating, but how cute would they be as a table?

I would immediately put a small table lamp on one and create an intimate end table. That’s right, there’s no keeping me down when it comes to creative design.

Woven-Chair-Sofa-Furniture-Interior-Design

Have you ever caught yourself wishing you could inject depth into your space like this gorgeous sun room above from Vogue? Adding woven furniture brings texture to a space and can instantly give your room dimension.

Here is a round up of some beautiful, inspiring images incorporating woven furniture that are sure to wet your creative appetite.

 Basket-Chair-Woven-Furniture-Design

The basket chair has been a staple since mid century design emerged. Here you see two incarnations of this classic chair, a retro-revival from Poppy Talk and a funky interpretation from Scrapbook. Both keep the same cool basket chair shape, but differ in materials and styling.

Whichever way you decide to go, adding a funky, woven basket chair will give your room dimension and character.

Leather-Woven-Furniture-Dining-Chairs

When you think of woven furniture most don't immediately think of woven leather, but it's a vastly popular look.

These cool and modern dining chair designs are versatile enough that they can be paired with a rustic table like in the image above from Coastal Chic Living or they can have a modern edge among traditional furniture as in the other image from Merchant Design.

Outdoor-Lounge-Chairs-Woven-Furniture-Design

Woven rattan outdoor chairs are what most people think of when they think of woven furniture. Instead of going for a traditional look try something edgier like these mid century-inspired lounge chairs, spotted on Design Boom. The wide weave of these outdoor chairs is chic and fresh and, while they are on trend now, will easily transition and remain relevant and cool.

Lighting for 2014

I have been working on a design project that has me on a quest for industrial lighting. You know....the kind of lighting that combines rustic with vintage and metal with clean simple lines.

The kind of lighting that might have hung in a factory 100 years ago....like these beautiful lights featured recently in Residence Magazine.

Industrial lighting.....it's calling my name. And so....in no particular order....here are my top seven industrial lighting picks for 2014.

Attached to the wall with a metal plate, the clear glass fixture says vintage with style. Combine a pair of these sconces with an aged silver mirror to create a one-of-a-kind look for a mantel or empty wall space.

Accent Lamp

Edison Bulb Accent Lamp

This lamp is perfect for a reading room or library. It features a vintage style bulb with seeded glass and a metal base. Pair it with vintage books and a metal armillary for a simple side table vignette.

Geometric Lighting for Modern Interiors

From art prints to lighting, upholstery to tablewares, faceted and geometric home accents are having a moment. And for good reason! With their mix of clean lines and playful personality, geometrics make a modern interior statement that is at once versatile and memorable.

Faceted table lamps, as seen above on The Marion House Book and Lamps Plus, are a quick and easy way to get today's geometric look in your own space.

When choosing a contemporary table lamp with a geometric design, think of it as an eye-catching accent as well as a source of illumination. In other words, feel free to explore a little outside your comfort zone!

Try a striking metallic finish like silver or gold. Explore textures like marble, stone, and wood.

As for styling tips, incorporate your lamp into a quirky vignette (above top, A Beautiful Mess, and below, Lamps Plus) or let it stand alone on a nightstand (above bottom, via Arkpad). By itself or part of a mix, geometric lighting has major impact!

Brilliant Ideas For Bedroom Lighting

Bedroom Lighting

Bedroom lighting comes in many forms and is worth considering in a thoughtful way, especially as we spend 1/3 of our lives asleep!

Like most rooms in the house, it’s a good idea to layer your lighting as we tend to do multiple things in our bedroom...beyond sleeping. Lonny Magazine has a wide range of beautiful images of bedrooms. From traditional to contemporary and everything in between, these images show the many ways beautiful bedroom lighting enhances a room.

When it comes to layering, think about general lighting as well as task lighting. General lighting can be achieved by hanging a beautiful pendant light on the ceiling while task lighting is usually found as swing arm wall lights or table lamps on bedside tables or dressers. Even clip on lights for reading is a great idea.

Modern Bedroom Lights

1. Robert Abbey Odelia Clear Glass Black Shade Table Lamp 2. Doughnut Collection Deep Patina Bronze Wall Lamp

Modern bedroom lights should be simple and clean.

Clear glass lamps are a great option if you can’t mount sconces or if you rent and can’t drill into the walls.

Square or geometric shades and industrial materials should be your aesthetic guide when it comes to this look.

Glamorous Bedroom Lighting

3. Felicity Modern Chrome Pendant Light 4. Murray Feiss Stylus Nickel and Crystal Table Lamp (currently unavailable)

Glamorous bedrooms should be covered in bling. Think crystal, mercury glass and chandeliers. If it shines, it’s glam.

This look is very romantic and replicates the look of Hollywood glamour.

Traditional Lighting

5. Wildwood Celadon Classic Urn Table Lamp 6. Triple Pivot Plug-In Swing Arm Wall Lamp

Traditional bedroom lighting follows the same functionality as any other style but is a tad more timeless and cozy.

Antique brass is always chic when it comes to the classic bedroom, as are urn-shaped table lamps and curved lamp shades with fringe.
