Walking around Sydney and Melbourne in Australia I could not help it but soak up the design inspiration and go all goggly-eyed at the gorgeous filigreed balconies of the Victorian-era homes. Intricate detail, color variation and innumerable variance had me wandering the streets discovering one unique design after another.
I was so inspired by this I thought about about how to incorporate some of this beautiful iron handwork back at home. Below I will share some ideas on how to bring a bit of Victorian ironwork design into your own home.
This industrial chic interpretation of Victorian ironwork, which I photographed, will have you swooning too.
The beautiful pedestrian gate I found features a strong and streamlined circular focal point with intricate detail spiraling outward. Similarly, the Quorum Salento Parisian White Chandelier features a bold center piece with delicately detailed arms. A large iron chandelier in your entry way would have the same effect for entering guests as this small gate that packs a big punch.
I was drawn to this particular balcony because of the vibrant blue color of the iron work. The color was still so vibrant yet there was beautiful patina and age that only added to the charm of the railing.
While simplistic in detail, this 2 1/2 Quart Blue Enameled Cast Iron Humidifier Kettle completely captures the antique look of the bright blue ironwork. With a vintage shape and speckled finish, you immediately feel that same sense of charm and age.
Here again you can see the grand scale of these filigreed, iron balcony railings. The massive patterns are repeated, sometimes across multiple homes. The rust color that the iron work enhances is mirrored in the Uttermost Teyona Forged Iron Etagere.
Both the etagere and the balconies have an intricately delicate feel while having the ability to carry a large presence.
The bold repeating pattern of this balcony is not as delicate as the rest, with larger, less detailed repeats. The simplicity is also present in the La Parra Collection Hand-Forged 40" High Wall Mirror, where a hard, industrial edge meets gentle detailing. These would make beautiful bathroom and entry mirrors because of the strong yet streamlined detailing.
How will you incorporate some Australian-inspired ironwork into your home?
