Rope Decor - Nautical Decorating Ideas

The wonderful thing about rope decor is that it looks good regardless of the season. Although it's typically thought of as a nautical summer decorating idea, rope decor in the fall and winter can take on a warm, earthy aesthetic.

How your rope decor “looks” can be determined by how it’s placed and with what. Rope is essentially neutral so it can be somewhat of a chameleon.  As we move into fall, think about pairing rope items with plaid fabrics and orange throws. If you are still in a warm climate, accents of rope within a blue and white room, like the image above, will look smashing.

Rope Home Accents

Surprisingly, rope can adorn and become the essence of items well beyond the gym and harbor. From fabulously chic stair rails to beside table lamps that make a statement, rope adds texture and visual interest to every room in the house. Rope is a hearty material and thus great for items that may take a beating like ottomans and adjustable bar stools

Rope Covered Home Accessories

Decorative accessories also look great when covered in rope. The trend in covering mirrors with rope is still hot as are rope handles on Lucite boxes and tables. So, forget your preconceived notions that rope was more befitting of Robinson Crusoe than a chic makeover in your own home.

How to Bring Outdoor Decor Inside for Fall

$

Just because the seasons are changing doesn't mean your summertime decorating efforts have to go to waste! Here's how to bring your outdoor decor inside for fall to give it a whole new life in the coming months.

How to Bring Outdoor Decor Inside for Fall

Small to medium outdoor fountains can be brought inside and used on a tabletop, or freestanding. This rustic cascading fountain has a bowl on top to hold foliage in the summer - why not decorate it for the holidays with some festive greenery and garland? A larger fountain can become a freestanding focal point in your room, like the example above from Elsie Interior.

An Outdoor Area Rug in a Foyer

Outdoor area rugs can work just as well indoors, and are great for high-traffic (and high-mess) areas like kitchens, hallways, playrooms, and foyers. Instead of packing them away for the winter, try re-using them inside your home. The burst of color and pattern might be just what you need to get you through the winter months.

How to Bring Outdoor Dining Chairs Inside for Fall

Finally, don't forget about your patio set! In a pinch, your outdoor chairs that sat on the deck in the summer can become extra seating during dinner parties (like in this photo from Better Homes & Gardens), and your outdoor patio table can be easily disguised indoors with a tablecloth.

From fountains, to area rugs, to tables and chairs, it's easy to bring your outdoor decor inside and give it a whole new life through fall and winter.

Farmhouse Kitchen Style

White Kitchen in the Farmhouse Look

I love the farmhouse kitchen style.

Good thing I live in a farmhouse.

There's just something about rustic and vintage and weathered and chippy..... topped off with a little charm.

Today's farmhouse style combines the elegance of classic lines with the functionality and purpose of a hardworking kitchen.

Kind of like Laura Ingalls Wilder meets Grace Kelly.

Here are a few ideas on how to add a little farmhouse to your decor.

Farmhouse Kitchen Style with a Chandelier

Start with the unexpected

Add a mini chandelier to a kitchen.

Or two or three.

There's just something about the combination of rustic and wood and painted furniture and white dishes and tarnished silver.....and a chandelier.

Shine a little farmhouse into your kitchen today.

Farmhouse Kitchen Decorating Inspiration

Get it out in the open

Display your collections on bookshelves or hutches on open shelving.

Stack dishes or glassware next to a topiary or mixing bowls.

Let your everyday become special when placed on an open shelf.

And then add a spectacular domed cake plate....to make your farmhouse kitchen truly sparkle.

White Farmhouse Kitchen with an Oversized Clock

Simple yet elegant

The key to farmhouse style is combining simple barstools with clean lines covered in white slipcovers with a patterned brick floor.

Draw the eye upward with an over-sized clock or a vintage sign.

It's the juxtaposition of these different looks that makes farmhouse kitchen style work.

Mismatched Stools in a Farm House Kitchen

So whether you live in a city high rise or on the rolling hills of the countryside....

....why not embrace the farmhouse kitchen style?

Vintage and chippy mixed with crystals and slipcovers and barn wood.

Perfect for creating your own elegant "Little House on the Prairie."

Styling Your Space with the Industrial Chic Design Trend

$

Oh how I love styling a space with the Industrial Chic design trend! Unless you're living under a rock, you've seen a lot of industrial chic in decor stores, designer portfolios and pretty much all over the place. Our new place has a few pops of industrial + I've always loved having a mix of old and new, glam and modern, and other contrasting styles. 'Industrial' and 'chic' typically don't go hand in hand but there are ways to make this trend work by styling your space in just the right way.

Industrial Chic Living Room with a Cowhide Rug

Start with a Solid Base

I think it's always important to choose the big pieces in a classic style - like a modern couch - and pair it with a fabulous rug and other industrial accessories. I'm a big believer in less is more, and that's something to keep in mind with this trend too. Think of your big pieces as your investment pieces and things you don't want to get tired of too quickly.

Industrial Chic Living Room with a Reclaimed Entertainment Unit

Mix it Up

I LOVE to mix industrial pieces with another style, I hate when a space feels too predicted and common. Some of my favorites are industrial modern and industrial glamour - gorgeous! A glamorous painting with an old vintage cabinet, etc.. Mixed styles always look amazing together, the contrast just brings out something fun in the space. It also makes it easy to switch things up to something chic when you're tired of a particular look.

Styling Your Space with the Industrial Chic Design Trend

Mostly Industrial

So yes, you can go all out and have most of your space industrial BUT you need to throw in a pop of something different and new to keep it from feeling stale. For example, you can replace your dining room lighting fixture in a glamorous style to help your space feel fresh. If it was up to my fiancee I think we would do it the other way around, mostly industrial with pops of modern/glam. It's still completely chic, it still looks great but one piece too many can be overkill.

What do you think of the new industrial chic design trend - love it or leave it?

The Vintage Charm Design Trend

Design trends come and go but Vintage Charm is timeless and based on classic shapes and designs that never go out of style. While there are contemporary home furnishings that have entered the “classic” category, more times than not, it’s French and English-inspired decor that rules this field and deserves to take a bow.

Elegantly shaped chair legs and tables as well as sophisticated dining room light fixtures will always evoke a more romantic period in time and thus feel ageless. In honor of such beauty, Lamps Plus has created an entire Vintage Charm section where you can peruse and find the perfect vintage-inspired decor for your home.

The Vintage Charm Design Trend

Just because something has vintage charm doesn’t mean it’s instantly “granny chic.” Cute and contemporary shades on antique lamps can add some 'zip', and using monochromatic fabric on windows and chairs (without embellishing them with tassels and trim) will keep things modern. Notice how simple the drapes and slipcovers look in the lower dining room image? Simple soft furnishings paired with antique items work together to create a fresh take on vintage style.

Classic Living Room Decor

Another trick in making vintage pieces look modern is to keep walls crisp and neutral. There is no better way to appreciate the gorgeous lines of vintage home decor than when it’s highlighted against a simple backdrop.

A Lush Brazillian Poolside

I have found a new design inspiration - Brazil! I just got back from a few days in Rio and have a new muse. There are so many ways to view the city and their eye on design. There is a fabulous mix of traditional, colonial Portuguese architecture peppered throughout the massive urban sprawl of Rio.

Design Inspiration from Brazil

1. Zuo Draper White Lounge Chair

Brazil is on the one hand, tropical, lush and laid back, yet is also bursting with color, energy and style. Because of the tropical ecosystem there is a fair amount of teak and other supple woods found on decking and in furniture. This has a decidedly beachy feel and begs to be explored with bare feet and sun-kissed skin.

Poolside Decor in Brazil

2. Black and White Dotted Squares Giclee 3. Warped Bronze Ribbon Frame Wall Mirror

The main sidewalks in Rio that hug the beach are an explosion of mid-century design. Nowhere can you find dull concrete, rather, the walkways are done in a classic black and white mosaic. So chic!

This nod to modernism can also be found in the trendy Hotel Fasano. How lucky was I to stay there? The pool area is adorned with these amoeba shaped mirrors. I never thought I would see polished metal accent mirrors by a pool...divine.

Design and Style in Rio

4. Fuchsia Black Shade Ovo Table Lamp 5. Tiles Outdoor Square Teal Ottoman

Yes, that is a super model being photographed as I laid out my very, very white skin by the pool. I loved the pop of hot pink and thought how perfect for this tropical paradise. Was I able to find table lamp designs inspired by the photo shoot? Natch.

While I strolled the streets of Ipanema I found this fantastic nod to the past. In the midst of modern apartment blocks was a classic, colonial house adorned in an almost Moorish meets Portuguese style. I was so happy to see such an honorable nod to the past in such an up-and-coming South American City. Design inspiration is everywhere in Brazil!

Modern Lighting for Modern Interiors

$

What does 'modern' mean to you? As is so often the case with words that see a lot of use, the exact criteria for 'modern' can be nebulous. But when it comes to modern interiors, a few basic tenets do apply. Generally speaking, modern spaces can be characterized by clean lines, simple color palettes, and limited adornment. If you're looking to set the tone for a modern space, lighting goes a long way.

When it comes to modern lighting, the same definitional rules apply: think bold shapes and silhouettes, simple materials, and a focus on strong presence over fine details. As seen in these images from Pinterest, a fixture that falls into this category can have a big impact, even in a space that isn't inherently modern. So don't be afraid to mix modern lighting into a traditional space for a look that's all your own!

5 Ways to Add Brass Lighting in the Kitchen

$

0

After falling out of favor for over at least two decades since the '70s and '80s, brass lighting in the kitchen has made a comeback over the last few years. While mid-century lighting styles have been going strong in the living room (who hasn't craved a sputnik chandelier in this millennium?), the metal has just recently been making its way into other rooms. Brass pendants, and more recently, brass faucets and drawer pulls, have been accenting cooking spaces all over the Internet. Here are five shiny standouts.

5 Ways to Add Brass Lighting in the Kitchen

Pasadena-based interior designer Tamara Kaye Honey of House of Honey debuted this killer kitchen last year as a Traditional Home NewTrad winner. The black cabinetry, dark wood flooring, and white subway tile with black grout is right on trend, along with the trio of brass mini pendant lights for the kitchen island area and the brass lamps with luxury styling on the bookshelf.

Gilded Kitchen Cabinetry with Brass Chandelier

French designer Jean- Louis Deoit goes glam in the kitchen of his Parisian flat with gorgeous gilded cabinets, which are tempered by the classic marble backsplash and counter. The brass chandelier adds an 'art deco meets mid-century' twist.

Brass Pendant Lighting Marble Backspash

In this Scandinavian kitchen spotted in Skona Hem, Nordic simplicity gets ratcheted up with brass detailing and rich color. A pair of low hanging brass pendants, plus two brass canisters and a brass paper towel holder, are lustrous with the emerald cabinetry.

Brass Island Light Fixtures in Better Homes and Gardens

This classic white kitchen featured in Better Homes & Gardens takes an unexpected turn with the addition of brass hardware on the drawers and and trim. The fanciful light fixture, with its Art Nouveau detailing, adds a vintage vibe.

Brass Kitchen Pendant Light Chalkboard Wall

Believe it or not, Kristin Jackson, interior designer and blogger behind The Hunted Interior, made the brass pendant that hangs in her very cute kitchen. In a moment of DIY inspiration, Jackson turned a brass bowl spotted at Goodwill into the centerpiece of her black and white sink area. Genius, right? What a unique way to add brass lighting in the kitchen.

Travel Destinations as Design Inspiration - Europe

Travel destinations can change your life and offer new perspectives on how you view design. Inspiration is abound everywhere in the world, and this post is the first of two showing the design influences of other cultures. I have chosen European countries in this installment: France and Scandinavia. Both are vastly old yet offer very different inspiration when it comes to interiors.

French Architecture

While France is certainly a modern country, their design sensibility has remained a touch more formal and rooted in tradition. The revolution did very little to sway the classic lines of a delicious bergère chair or Versailles-inspired opulent mirrored side table, and for that we should be glad. There is something truly elegant in everything they do, whether it’s pastries or an ornate crystal chandelier.

Travel Destinations as Design Inspiration - France

Shopping List: 1. Antique Flemish and Clear Glass Taper Candelabrum 2. Set of 4 Idyllic Bridges Framed Prints Wall Art 3. Avril Font Noir Accent Chair 4. Andre Eiffel Tower Table Lamp

Scandinavian Interiors

Northern European countries that make up Scandinavia are just as old as France but have historically had a more modern approach to interiors. Even as early as the 18th Century, Scandinavian design has had a simplicity of form and color as can be seen in the above image.

Travel Destinations as Design Inspiration - Scandinavia

Perhaps it’s due to the long, dark winters that have resulted in Scandinavian’s love of brighter, stark white decor and simple but elegant lighting. Regardless, there is a freshness to Nordic homes that seem unencumbered by the past. I love that the traditional Scandinavian exteriors mask a “shock of the new.” Don’t be fooled though - this minimalism can still reflect beauty and craftsmanship.

Scandinavian Home Decor

Shopping List: 1. Couture Polished Chrome Black Pendant Light 2. Robert Abbey Rico Espinet Buster White Globe Table Lamp 3. Set of 2 Azzo White Plastic Side Chairs 4. White Finish Beveled Rectangular Wall Mirror

These two travel destinations in Europe - France and Scandinavia - just barely scratch the surface of the design inspiration that's bursting from overseas countries. If you need a new perspective on design, may I suggest hopping on a plane?

Four Entry Lighting Ideas

Front Door Lighting Inspiration

Someone wise once said....you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Your front door agrees.

Especially when it comes to entry lighting ideas.

Paint, greenery, accessories, house numbers, mailboxes and planters can work together to truly create a welcoming entry for your guests.....

....but nothing makes a front door more inviting than lighting.

So just in case you've been having a conversation with your front door....

....here are some first-impression worthy lighting ideas.

Front Entry with Fall Wreath and Lighting

1.  Side by Side

Stylish lanterns like these featured on the Nell Hills blog make a statement for the front door.

Outdoor wall lights and lanterns add visual interest.

Choose the patina that best fits your entry such as vintage black, bronze, or even a burnished gold.

Then decorate for the seasons and greet your guests in style.

Thistlewood Farms Front Door Lighting

2.  Back to Basics

Sometimes simplicity is best.

These contemporary black sconces with a farmhouse flair add that perfect welcoming touch to the gatehouse at Thistlewood Farms.

The white and black combination provides a simple, classic feel for any entrance.

Grand Entry Lighting on a Traditional House

3.  On a Grander Scale

And sometimes a little "grand" is even better.

Greige Designs recently featured some of the work of McAlpine and Tankersley that showcased this amazing entry with a hanging lantern.

Add a little grand to your front door....with a hanging lantern or decorative fixture to create drama and truly showcase your entry.

Candle Lanterns on Entryway Steps

4.  Step it Up

You can also create atmosphere simply by adding stand-alone lanterns filled with candles.

This welcoming entry was recently featured on Canadian House and Home and truly demonstrates how plants and accessories can make such a difference.

Outdoor candle lanterns invite guests to stop and stay a while for a glass of sweet tea.

So put your best foot forward and add any (or all) of these four entry lighting ideas to make an inviting first impression.

Your front door will thank you.

For many of you out there, fall has started. The leaves have started to turn, it's starting to cool down and you're breaking out your fall weather essentials in your closet and your home. Unfortunately for those of us in LA, we are battling 90-100 degree weather days and laughing at the thought of having a HOT pumpkin spice latte. It is HOT here. When the AC isn't enough, or on the off chance that it actually breaks down, here are 3 stylish desk fans to help you cool your space down:

Travel Destinations as Design Inspiration - Asia and India

There is nothing more exotic and exciting than the multicultural design inspiration to be found within the various travel destinations of Asia. I have selected India and China as two fabulous examples. These ancient cultures are rich in history and filled with amazing artisans. From carving and textiles to painting and architecture, there is a feast for the senses.

Indian Interiors as Design Inspiration

India strikes an interesting pose. This design aesthetic is thoroughly unique combining stunning local, Moorish and Colonial British elements into the soup. India’s love of color and pattern is world-famous and challenges our traditional notions of design. Even when modern Indian interiors are monochromatic, one can usually eye an intricate wall mirror or finely punched hanging lantern for indoor or outdoor use.

India is the type of country that can unfold in layers and offer new design ideas around every corner. Just observing how a turban or sari is wrapped can be the catalyst for upholstery or window treatment. It’s just endless fabulosity.

Shopping List: 1. Brushed Nickel Metal Candle Lantern (currently unavailable) 2. Multicolored Glass Antique Copper Lantern 3. Surya Fallon Brick Area Rug 4. Surya 22" Wenge with Blue Haze Jute Ottoman Pouf

Travel Destinations as Design Inspiration - China

China is another travel destination to find inspiration, albeit in a very different way. My impression is that the China we are so fascinated by is the “Old China,” the pre-revolution china that seemed as forbidden as the Forbidden City. There tends to be more nuance and control to Chinese design versus the earthy Indian look above.

Chinese Home Decor

Contemporary Chinese interiors are a marvelous combination of simple, almost disappearing furniture as the backdrop to intricate antiques such as screens, sculptures, inlaid cabinetry or textiles. This clean aesthetic can work beautifully in both modern or traditional homes.

Home Decor Inspired by India - Part 2 - Shape!

The amount of attention paid to architectural detail in India is amazing! It's easy to be inspired by India and translate the beautiful details into your own home decor. Buildings standing across this vast country have undulating curves and finely distinctive geometric shapes, lending to stunning visual moments.  As in the pictures above from Conde Nast Traveler and An Indian Summer, there may be no more beautiful architecture than across India.

India Decor Inspiration - Windows Lace Design

There are so many opportunities to bring the beautiful architectural shapes of India into your own home decor.  As you will see throughout this post, and in the images above from Flickr, the shapes takes center stage and color (the beautiful color we focused on in Part 1) fades to the wayside.  These shapes are easily integrated into your home design whether you favor a more streamlined, modern look or a funkier, eclectic style.  Because the colors remain neutral, including these Indian-inspired details will add depth to your space, but not overwhelm your existing style.

The image above from Flickr is a gorgeous example of the neutral geometric detail of Indian Architecture.  Adding a graphic accent table or carved arched wall mirror can really make that necessary pop in your space.

Dazzling Blue Swatch

I’m a blue jeans and boots girl but I never liked blue in my home.
Too traditional, too typical, too boring …
I thought.

Then a funny thing happened that had me singing the blues in my house. I found a pair of fabulous, blue velvet, mid century club chairs. (See them in all their glory in my living room at Eclectically Vintage.)

Blue Velvet Club Chair

I’m right on trend too, because Dazzling Blue has been named Pantone's top color of spring 2014.

According to the Pantone Color Institute, Dazzling Blue is a shade that’s more vibrant than traditional navy – in fact, it’s the color of Facebook.

Blue Painted Wall in a Library

While I love the vibrant blue walls in this den from Amanda Nisbet Design, you don’t have to commit to such a grand scale of blue. Small touches can update any room whether it’s a simple blue drum lampshade, an accent pillow with dazzling blue accents, or a vibrant blue table lamp.

Blue painted stairs in this lake house are young and hip and anything but boring thanks to the design skills of Emily Henderson.
