6 Great Wall Sconces for the Home Library

A Warm Book-Lined Library

Wall sconces add function and style to a home library. As we head into fall our interiors become more important and the den or library is the perfect place to study, read and generally enjoy a respite from the cooler weather. Like your kitchen and office, lighting is key to making the most of any room. Creating a mood by offering the right task lighting is key to this type of space, as shown in these inspiration images from A Perfect Grey.

Home Library Decor with Adjustable Sconce

1. Hudson Valley Exeter Antique Nickel Swing Arm Wall Light

Adjustable lighting is great. The ability to move lights around allows you to direct light where needed, like for reading and hobbies such as sewing and knitting. This type of light an also be used to illuminate artwork and collectibles when mounted above a bookcase.

Family Room Lighting with a Wall Sconce

2. House of Troy Greensboro Antique Brass Torch Wall Lamp

The fixed scone with shade is time-honored and chic. You can’t go wrong with this style if your goal is an attractive way to add light without the need for task lights. You can always jazz up a wall sconce with a small decorative lamp shade in various colors or trim.

A Dark and Dramatic Home Library with Lighting

3. Chase Collection Bronze Swing Arm Wall Lamp

Swing arm lamps, like adjustable sconces, are multi-functional. I love these lamps in libraries as well as in bedrooms. They are perfect for creating a soft overall glow to a room but offer ample light when reading.

Traditional Library Lighting

4. Weathered Brass Black Shade Hardwire Swing Arm Wall Lamp

Traditional library lighting in brass and black is as old as Colonial Williamsburg. No worries if you like this look but want it a tad more modern. A major trend in home design is aging brass to look funky and industrial. The color combination is classic yet the styling “on point.”

Brass Lighting Fixtures

5. Murray Feiss Argento Collection Wall Sconce 6. Hinkley Congress Brushed Caramel Wall Sconce

Brass lighting has a warm patina that is so elegant. The antique look can replicate the industrial look which is so popular or a great take on Art Deco. Either way, thye are great wall sconces for the home library.

Mismatched Kitchen Islands to Up the Style Quotient

Colorful Kitchen Islands for a Unique Kitchen

Mismatched kitchen islands and cabinetry seriously up the style quotient in your eating space. How? Finishing a kitchen island in a different color from the main cabinetry, in a hue that either complements or contrasts, lends a custom look in a room that's all too often overly matchy-matchy.

Going with a mismatched island in a daring shade that infuses a pop of color lets you experiment without fully committing (or going overboard). It's also quite practical, as seen in these images from Ali Schwarz Design Group, Elle Decor, JAS Design Build, and House Beautiful.

White is the classic kitchen color of choice, but when it comes to the island, which gets a lot of wear and tear, it rarely remains pristine. Opting for a kitchen island in a darker, more versatile wood tone, just makes sense.

Black and White Kitchen with Island

Hayley Hayes and Tracey Leeson of Brisbane-based interior design firm Porchlight Interiors strive for a timeless, classic style with a modern twist. That is certainly the case in this black and white kitchen. The black island grounds the white space, while its white marble countertop keeps it from becoming weighed down. Stylish black pendant lights punctuate the white walls. The result is crisp and clean, and upkeep is probably pretty easy too.

Shopping guide: 1. Possini Euro Enzo Black Pendant Light 2. Lexington Steel Top Black Buffet 3. Bermuda Swivel Counter Stool

Pale Wood and Green Glass Kitchen Island Design

Manhattan-based interior designer Anthony Baratta, know for colorful, high end, and sophisticated spaces, brings his impeccable contemporary interpretation of classic design to this kitchen. The center island is done in pale wood with an oval silhouette and a celery green glass countertop, and an inset teal ceiling with an array of fantastic pendant lights hover above. It's an obvious showpiece, but one with plenty of function.

Shopping guide: 1. Spectrum Multi-Color Glass Ceiling Fixture 2. Cornflower Ruffle Hand-Blown Glass Bowl 3. Stainless Steel Top Wood Drop Leaf Kitchen Cart

Dark Wood Kitchen Island in a White Kitchen

This Hamptons kitchen featured in Elle Decor belongs to husband and wife Interior design team Amy and Todd Hase, who found inspiration in the French countryside, where they spend much of their summer. The 18th-century table with bottom shelf, which they purchased at a Paris flea market, makes a perfect center island, providing storage, a workspace, and warmth to the otherwise white room.

So after seeing these great examples, why not mismatch your kitchen island to create a whole new look?

The Many Styles of Wall Sconces

Wall Sconces

Lighting should always be layered within a room, and the many styles of wall sconces in particular are an ideal way to add that layering with style. Decorative wall sconces are functional and offer different kinds of light depending upon the type of shades, bulbs and materials you choose.

Stylish Wall Lights

Wall sconces are an appropriate lighting choice for virtually every application both inside and outside your home. Lonny Magazine had a wide selection of images that show the functionality and high style that wall sconces offer. I love the sheer volume of choices! From glamorous dressing room sconces dripping in crystal to artisan glass sconces for outside, the options are endless.

A hot trend in lighting is filament bulbs (also known as Edison bulbs) that have an old-school feel. While they are chic, they are best used as ambient lighting since they will not offer much direct light. Furthermore, darker shades on sconces will also limit the light. Those choices are great for additional mood lighting in halls and living rooms.

If brighter light is needed, try exposed bulbs, added crystal drops or a shiny surface like chrome. A key spot for much needed light is in the bathroom. Beautiful bathroom lights are a necessity and are something you will use every day so be mindful of picking a great style that functions well.

Traditional Wall Sconces

1. Jonathan Adler Ventana Nickel Plug-In Wall Lamp 2. Arlington Double Light Nickel Wall Sconce

Classic sconces are elegant choices for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. Look for finishes like brass, crystal, and chrome.

Contemporary Wall Sconces

3. Industrial Cage Dark Rust Wall Sconce 4. Holtkoetter Bernie Turbo Bronze LED Swing Arm Wall Lamp

Hot trends in lighting, like industrial and minimally-styled sconces, are just a couple of the many styles of wall sconces available. Remember, a sconce is the perfect opportunity to make a unique design statement.

A Transitional Guest Bathroom Design

Out of all the bathrooms in your home, the guest bathroom is the one that’s meant to impress your guests, am I right? Here are a few creative guest bathroom lighting ideas that you will love and your guests will appreciate.

Assess your current lighting in your guest bathroom:

If you are like many homeowners you have the same bathroom lighting fixtures from twenty years ago, or have the basic lighting the builder put into your home. While this may be sufficient, over the years your entertaining guest lifestyle may have changed. Especially during the summers and holidays when out of town guests and their families need to share the bathroom, ensure the lighting is adequate.

Is there ample light at the mirror and in the shower/bathtub area? Are there shadows or dark areas that could use a fixture? Make a note of these and determine if ambient or overall lighting is needed - and also consider task lighting for mirror usage as well.

Clean and Modern Guest Bathroom

Choose lighting that compliments your bathroom decor:

Once you have determined what areas of your guest bathroom could use more light or an updated look, it’s now time to enjoy choosing lighting fixtures! Take cues from your bathroom decor, like the photo above from Green Tile Installer. Modern bathroom light fixtures with minimal detailing and sleek profiles look beautiful with designer tile, quartz, and granite countertop materials and can bring a refined and minimalist look to your bathroom.

Traditional guest bathrooms with intricate wood detailing, like the one at the beginning of this post from Christine Markatos Design, have classic and natural features that could benefit from elegant traditional bath lighting fixtures.

Contemporary Guest Bathroom Decorating with Pendant Lights

Lighting can be functional and for aesthetics:

While the appeal of lighting is usually for a functional purpose of illuminating your bathroom for safety and bathing, you can also use lighting to create a mood, as seen in the above photo from Gardner Mohr Architects. Creative guest bathroom lighting ideas such as placing sconces at your mirror or installing dimmable recessed lighting can add ambiance and are wonderful for guests who may need a variety of lighting options.

Several lighting stores and online stores like Lamps Plus have lighting collections to help you choose fixtures that go together. Consider this option to choose ceiling fixtures, wall mounted fixtures, pendants, and wall sconces that will all compliment your bathroom decor.

Now that your guest bathroom is ready to be shown off, use these helpful tips for choosing lighting that is sure to bring out the best in your bathroom and help your guests enjoy their stay!

Colorful Fall Home Decorating Ideas with Amber & Rust

It's that time of year again!  The leaves are changing and falling ever so beautifully to the ground - except, sadly, on the west coast where I live.  I have to just imagine the beautiful fall colors that are happening all over.

Maybe this is why I am giddy thinking about colorful fall home decorating ideas that incorporate amber and rust.  The comparison above between an uncredited Pinterest image of fall foliage and a beautiful bedroom shot from Simply Decorate show us how to bring the amber and rust hues of fall to your home decor.

Amber-Rust-Fall-Bold-Color-Design-Decor

This bold image above and following images below from Simply Decorate will show you different ways to incorporate amber and rust in different ways into your home.  Above, you see these fall accent colors in the vintage wing-back chairs, ornate table lamps and the rectangular, stylish mirror complimenting a bold turquoise wall.  Mixing these bright, bold colors are for the more adventurous design-savvy folks who are not afraid to make a statement with their color choices.

Amber-Rust-Black-White-Graphic-Interior-Design

This image incorporates amber and rust as the main color palette while mixing in bold patterns in neutrals black and white to add a graphic pop.  Keeping the beautiful area rug and traditional sofa a deep rusty red, the walls are painted an amber hue.  To add dimension to this color palette bold, graphic accent pillows, accent chairs and stools and modern graphic art are layered in, creating a fun, modern space.

Amber-Rust-Fall-Accents-Decor-Design

The beautiful images above show us that bringing amber and rust accents into your fall home decorating doesn't have to be a huge commitment.  Accent rugs, throw pillows and drapery are all easily interchangeable within the scheme of home decor and can add a rich fall-inspired punch to any room.  Notice again how these fall foliage colors are contrasted, even subtly, with blues and turquoise to make them really pop and command attention while at the same time being extremely rich, warm and inviting.

4 Amazing Mirrored Accent Tables

This holiday season I'm introducing the farmhouse to the glorious decade of the 1920's.

A style represented so well in the Fitzgerald suite at the Plaza recently featured in Rue Magazine.

A world of glitter and glamour and glitz and shimmer and sophistication...

.....and mirrored accent tables.

Barn doors meet gilded metal accent pieces.

Apple baskets meet clean lines styled with bling.

Aged brick walls meet the glitter and style and shine of the roaring twenties.

This holiday season.....my rural country farmhouse is taking a trip through the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

And to celebrate.....here are some of my favorite charming and glamorous mirrored accent tables:

Mirrored Hall Console

This mirrored console table with its graceful legs and curved profile compliments the style of the farmhouse library.

It's a piece to be tucked into the empty space in the bay window and layered with a vintage coffee crate and rustic branches.

Styled with leather books and stacks of wooden boxes, this mirrored table would add glamour and sophistication to any room.

Round Mirrored Accent Table

This polished nickel and mirrored table with its beveled mirror top is the perfect fit for the butler's pantry.

Styled with white ware and rustic numbered baskets, it adds just a touch of glamour.

Juxtaposed next to a vintage ladder layered with antique linens....

.....this table makes a stylish accent piece for a farmhouse kitchen and pantry.

2 Drawer Mirrored Nightstand Table

This two-drawer mirrored accent table looks right at home in the downstairs guest bathroom.

Centered on a bead board wall and surrounded by antique signs and crisp white linens, this table adds sophistication to the space.

And styled with a wire basket and stacks of monogrammed towels, it's a great storage option as well.

Brass and Mirror Side Table

This brass side table with mirrored accents compliments the rustic decor of the farmhouse front entry.

The tiny finials on the top of the table mimic the larger accents found on the stairs.

This piece should be styled with antique numbers and vintage bookends, adding drama and sophistication to the entrance.

The glitter and sophistication of the roaring twenties brings style and glamour to the classic farmhouse design.

It's a combination that works.

Truly.

Adding a little shimmer with sophisticated mirrored accent tables and plenty of The Great Gatsby inspiration....

.....is the perfect way for a farmhouse to deck the halls.

3 Ways to Create a Cozy Home for the Holidays

Can you believe it's already November!? The holiday season is officially here and it's time to get your home ready.  Here are 3 ways to create a cozy home for the holidays...

1. Incorporate Warm Colors

Create a Cozy Home for the Holidays with Warm Colors

Warm color palette from Creative Color Schemes

As most of you already know, the warmer the colors in a space the cozier you can feel. I don't mean a bright red but colors like browns, deep reds and burnt orange make your space feel a little smaller and definitely more comfortable. The color palette above is just a sample of warm colors but you get the idea the minute you walk into a home decor store and into their holiday section.

2. Holiday/Winter Accessories

Festive Christmas Living Room Decor

Great example of incorporating reds and other holiday decor from Midwest Living

My favorite part of the holidays is decorating and buying new accessories for our space. Take your warm color palette and bring in things like new lighting, rugs and other accessories that you can use every year. I don't think an entire overall is necessary but how can you even resist the holiday section in stores? An easy way to do this is to swap out 5 of your accessories for 5 holiday pieces. For instance, our pillows are black and silver on the couch so I'll swap those out for something either related to Christmas or pillows in the warm color scheme we've picked.

Lamp shades are easy to swap out as well as decorative home accessories like vases, candles, things that go on your mantle and so on. This is the easiest way to update your space and make it feel a bit cozier. Maybe even a yummy scented candle too.

3. Lights!

Snowman Novelty Light

I LOVE bringing in cheerful lighting options like this adorable Snow Man lantern. Lighting is probably the easiest part because you can always just use a string of lights that almost everyone has stashed away somewhere. If you're looking for something less holiday but still cozy, swap out your lamp shades for a festive red lamp shade. You can even think about switching out your light bulbs for bulbs with a warmer hue. Lanterns and electric candles are also a great addition, pulling your entire space together with the final touch.

What are you guys doing to create a cozy home for the holidays? Let me know in the comments below!

7 Hallway Lighting Ideas with Pendant Lights

Leaving your hallway with the bare minimum of chandeliers and light fixtures is a mistake. Not only do you want to be sure it is well-lit, but it's a room that should be styled like any other. Below are 7 hallway lighting ideas that make the most of each space with distinctive pendant lights.

Hallway Lighting Ideas with Pendant Lights

Dolce Capiz Shell Mini Pendant

The Capiz shell chandeliers in triplicate echo the orange benches, providing a nice rhythm down the pristine white hall of this airy, modern home. The casual feel of the Capiz shells adds a playful feeling to the otherwise stark decor. Image: Douglas Friedman.

Black Mid Century Pendant Lighting

Possini Euro Design Black Dome Pendant

A black, mid-century modern style pendant punctuates a white hallway leading into a library in a home built by Melbourne, Australia-based Techne Architects. Although a simple silhouette, the bold color anchors the narrow space, establishing it as a worthy introduction to the main event. Image: Thomas Blachford.

Lighting Ideas for the Hallway with Pendants

Chesapeake Collection Forged Bronze Pendant

The square framed lantern echoes the lines of the metal and glass front door in the entry hall of this Houston home designed by architect J. Marshall Porterfield, Jr. The tile by Segreto Finishes adds another layer of neutral color, texture, and additional linear patterns.

Contemporary Hallway Lighting Ideas

Jonathan Adler Ipanema Multi Boom Polished Nickel Pendant

The long passageway with glass sliders in this Eugene, Oregon home designed by 2Form Architecture maximizes the view of the pond outside. The spare, stick-like chandeliers make a statement without distracting from the other elements of the space and landscape.

Red Pendant Lights Add Color to a Hallway

Possini Euro Red Mini Pendant

This quintessential Swedish home, done in white with pops of color combines mid-century Scandinavian furniture with British-inspired decor, a tribute to the homeowner's roots. The vintage red pendant is a fun way to punctuate the hallway, alone with the Marimekko fabric and gallery wall of family photos and art. Image: Lisbet Sporndly.

Geometric Lighting

Robert Abbey Satori Bronze Pendant

The rigid grid of picture frames and trio of geometric pendant lights counterbalance the archways and the Paul Smith "Swirl" runner in this home decorated by Utah-based interior designer Kristin Rocke. And, the consistent black and white scheme of the accessories really allows the rug stand out.

7 Hallway Lighting Ideas with Pendant Lights

LBL Monty Mocha Murano Glass Pendant

This home, by Los Angeles-based firm Lewis/Schoeplein Architects, also features black metal and glass doors and tile work, but the overall feel is more global, thanks to the Moroccan pattern on the floor and Murano glass pendant lighting. This global look is just one of 7 hallway lighting ideas. Which one is your favorite?

Framed Mirrors

Framed Mirrors

Framed mirrors are a mainstay in all homes but choosing the right one with high style is the key to creating a beautiful room. Stylish framed mirror designs not only visually expand the size of a room, but can infuse a space with more light. The right mirror can also decoratively fill a wall for much less than original art, so why not consider one? Savvy Home blog has some very chic shots of beautiful rooms sporting great looking mirrors.

Round Mirrors

1. Howard Elliott Black Lacquer Round Wall Mirror

Round mirrors are a great counterpoint to bookcases and fireplace mantles. The feminine curves of a round mirror have been design staples from the 15th century, through the Federal period as well as today. While you can find round mirrors in many colors and materials, a safe bet is the classic black and gold.

Sunburst Mirrors

2. Vela Distressed Gold Sunburst Wall Mirror

Sunburst mirrors are nothing short of playful and elegant. Rooted in French design, these gems are great in foyers, bedrooms and living rooms. Stylistically they are graphic yet still traditional.

Rectangular Mirrors

3. Pecan Tradition Wood Framed Wall Mirror

Rectangular mirrors are probably the most versatile style around and are the most functional. Rectangular or square shapes allow you to see more, especially when getting dressed. Additionally, if you have a basic wood variety, it can be painted, decoupaged or silver and gold leafed.

Formal Mirrors

4. Uttermost Portici Antiqued Ivory Wall Mirror

Formal mirrors have an old world charm that is hard to resist. Ornately carved or embellished with colored glass, formal mirrors look like family heirlooms and add an air of elegance to both traditional and modern rooms.

Framed Bathroom Mirrors

5. Uttermost Bergamo Wall Mirror

Bathroom mirrors need not always be part of a medicine chest. Because bathrooms are used every day, when not use something special? New bathroom lighting like sconces are a beautiful way to highlight framed mirrors and complete a mini makeover.

If a framed mirror is too heavy or ornate for your taste, there's always the option of using frameless beveled mirrors instead. (You might be surprised how pretty and interesting these can look!)

Traditional Table Lamps

Traditional Table Lamps

How can you go wrong with traditional table lamps? Even in a contemporary space, the great design of a classic form can look sculptural. Lamps Plus has an entire section of table lamps that will inspire and surely brighten any space from bedside table to foyer. I found inspiration for this post while perusing Habitually Chic which always has such sumptuous images. Without question, as the world becomes more modern, we somehow still revel in what’s time-honored and classic.

English Style Lighting

1. English Floral Hand-Painted Porcelain Ginger Jar Table Lamp 2. Set of 2 Emily Crackle Bronze Buffet Lamps

Traditional table lamps with rich detailing have always been the hallmark of high style and nothing says high style better than a blue and white vase table lamps. Originally this style of lamp was conceived when people converted antique vases and ginger jars into lamps, something we don’t need to do today but the affect is still the same...beautiful.

Classic candlestick buffet lamps are also a design staple. Perfect for dining rooms and foyers, they are great for people with limited space as they take up virtually no space.

Vase Shaped Lamps

3. Currey And Company Schulyer Black Tortoise Table Lamp 4. Harriet White Glass Table Lamp

Just as the colors black and white will never go out of style, so too is that with black and white lamps. What I love most about these lamps is that we tend to focus on the graceful curves of the pottery when we are in the presence of this type of lighting. In my book, simple and elegant will always wins out over flashy.

Table Lamp Shapes

Don’t forget that in design just because one word may describe a trend or design, that there is only one way to interpret that description. Above are some great examples of the many shapes found in traditional table lamps.

Arched Mirrors Make a Space Look Larger

Mirrors are a quick and easy way to make your room look bigger add dimension to your home. When you're working with a small room, mirrors give the illusion of more space. If you have dark walls, mirrors bounce light around to create a more open effect. And as shown in the above image from Motherchief, an arch-shaped floor mirror can even provide a tromp-l'oeil to suggest the existence of a doorway to another room!

Decorative Wall Mirrors

For a clean look, try a single large wall mirror above a bed, sofa, or mantle as seen in this living room from Architectural Digest France. Alternatively, a gallery comprised of several round wall mirrors in varying sizes has vintage, art-inspired sensibility like the one in the below image from DIY-Home. Beautiful bedroom mirrors can bring a touch of sparkle and light to your sleeping space.

Whatever route you take to make your room look bigger with mirrors, just be sure to mount them properly so they don't fall. Your decor should bring a lifetime of good luck, not seven years of bad!

Can you believe the holidays are already here? Before you know it your relatives will be coming over to celebrate the season and your kitchen will become the headquarters for all the festivities! Pendant lighting or lighting that hangs from a chain or pole from your ceiling is a perfect asset to your holiday kitchen. It not only is decorative with gorgeous finishes but it can illuminate a seating area for your guests eating at a breakfast bar and provide additional lighting for multiple cooks in the kitchen. Here are a few creative pendant lighting ideas for your holiday kitchen this season.

Creative Pendant Lighting for your Holiday Kitchen

Choose lighting that compliments multiple task areas.

At the holidays your kitchen is like Grand Central Station! From multiple recipes being cooked to family hanging around enjoying festive eggnog, kitchen pendant lighting fixtures with both function and style should be able to compliment multiple task areas. If you have a larger open kitchen that opens into a dining room or a great room, choose lighting that can throw a wider beam of light to illuminate more area. Choosing pendant lighting that has a glass or reflective shade around it can help throw light further.

These pendant lights from In Detail Interiors (above) are a good example of fixtures that will illuminate multiple areas at once. Stay away from dark down lighting that only beams light downward, as it won’t illuminate adjoining spaces as well. If you’re looking for a more dramatic aesthetic to your kitchen then darker shades could be the perfect fit for your kitchen area.

Creative Pendant Lighting for your Holiday Kitchen

Choose metallic finishes to bring out your holiday decor.

Once you’ve decided how much light your kitchen needs, how about brightening your holiday home with metallic inspiration for the season? Whether you love copper, like these Benson-style pendant fixtures above from Witt Construction or you prefer a more subtle satin nickel or deep bronze finish your holiday decorations won’t be complete without some reflective inspiration. The beauty of pendant lights is that they can be the focal point of your kitchen with sparkle or take on a supporting role amongst other kitchen finishes.

Kitchen Pendant Lighting Over an Island

Place pendant lighting in nontraditional places.

Traditionally pendant lighting used to find its way over the dining room table and over the breakfast bar, but this holiday think of new ways to maximize your kitchen lighting. Do you have a sink that always seems dark to stand over as you clean vegetables for holiday meals? How about a center island in your kitchen that lacks a visual focal point? The holidays can be a great excuse to install a few more pendant lamps in your kitchen for function and for visual inspiration to accentuate your holiday kitchen. These two pendant lighting fixtures in Ellen Grasso & Sons’ kitchen (above) will help that center island become prime real estate when it’s time for holiday cooking.

Whether you are looking to bring more illumination to your holiday kitchen for cooking, entertaining or just enjoying more festive sparkle – use these ideas to brighten your kitchen with pendant lighting fixtures. Be careful, once you start in the kitchen – other rooms of your home are sure to follow!

Translating Celebrity Fashion into Interior Design

Whether we like to admit it or not, we all have at least one celebrity crush. By "crush" I mean we all have that one person in mind that we think is incredibly chic and cool on all accounts. Our attraction to this person has a lot to do with their personal style, which we can translate into a lifestyle and interior design aesthetic.

Here, we are looking at celebrity fashion and style from the likes of Ryan Gosling, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner and Nicole Richie and showing you how to translate this stylistic, fashion expression into beautiful interior design.

 Jennifer-Aniston-Coastal-Casual-Chic-Design

To achieve this classic coastal and casual chic look a'la Jennifer Aniston stick to natural, earthy textiles and woods with warm navy home accessories. This look works best when mixing style with comfort and ease.

Marilyn-Monroe-Eclectic-Bohemian-Design

While Marilyn Monroe is mainly known as an icon for hollywood glamour, this image of her emulates the ultimate in bohemian chic. Translate this look into your space by mixing pattern, color and scale. Oversized throw pillows, layered area rugs and large scale art pieces covering the walls will do the trick.

 Emmy-Rossum-Bold-Colorful-Vintage-Design

This look on Emmy Rossum epitomizes the bold vintage punchy look. Here in this minimalist mid-century kitchen, the bright red refrigerator adds the same amount of moxie. One big, bright punch is all it takes to make a drab scene into a showstopper.

 Victoria-Beckham-Modern-Nautical-Design

Nautical has been a big theme this year, and no one can make nautical look sexy and modern like Victoria Beckham. In this corresponding interior design bathroom vignette, modern nautical is front and center with beautiful wallpaper, a port-hole style mirror and nautically shaped sconces.

 Jennifer-Garner-Monochrome-Elegant-Design

Jennifer Garner is the epitome of comfortable elegance. Her look here is perfectly represented in this monochromatic living room which exemplifies ease, comfort and stylish elegance. Get the look in your home by picking a base color and working within that hue for furniture, accents and home accessories.

 Nicole-Richie-Femenine-Delicate-Vintage-Design

Nicole Richie is a total style icon; she has that vintage bohemian flawlessness down to a science. Rack the local flea markets and hole-in-the-wall second hands stores for an entry console that is beautifully worn in. The juxtaposition of the vintage piece on the polished wood floor is something I am sure Nicole would approve of.

Emma-Stone-Classic-Black-White-Design

When looking at the stunning red carpet dress Emma Stone rocked, I immediately gravitated towards this modern, classic black and white covered patio. Keeping this streamlined and chic equates to a look that will never go out of style.

And because we can't forget masculine design - who better to represent than...

Ryan-Gosling-Stylish-Sharp-Masculine-Design

No one can leave Ryan Gosling out of a celebrity round-up. His sexy and classic man-style is timeless. This burgundy tuxedo fully is translated into a gorgeous masculine living room; the space reads confidence, style and groomed manliness.

Holiday Decorating With Gold and Silver

holiday-decorating-with-gold-and-silver

"Tis the season for hot chocolate and jingle bells and mini marshmallows and brown paper packages tied up with bows.....

....and holiday decorating with gold and silver.

Inspired by this brilliant image from Architectural Digest featuring the work of Yifat Oren, this year Christmas at the farmhouse is all about the texture and sheen of metallics.

I'm decking the halls with glitter and glimmer and pops of silver....topped off with hints of gold.

And here's my favorite tips for decorating with these precious metals.

1.  Layer With Unexpected Textures

This swagged staircase from bhg contrasts the texture of a sisal rug with the freshness of greenery and the sparkle of silver and gold.

The silver accents are subtle....yet add the right amount of glitter and shimmer to make this staircase a showpiece.

Silver home accessories are also used  in the grouping of trees on the side table.

2.  Create a Neutral Pallet

Nothing sets off silver and gold like the simplicity of white....as in this simple Christmas vignette from bhg.

From the white slipcovers at the table to the apothecary jars filled with cookies and candies....each white element provides the perfect backdrop for gold and silver to take center stage.

Decorate under the tree with a neutral color scheme featuring brown packing paper and a single silver monogram.

3.  Don't Forget the Front Door

Greet your guest with a little sparkle and shine....like this wreath created by Martha Stewart.

Tuck fresh greens into a wreath form and top it off with silver ornaments in a variety of sizes.

Finish it off with a silver bow and metallic accents.

4.  Use Ornaments as Accents

Ornaments aren't just for the tree anymore.

Create a shimmering swag with this simple garland from bhg that features gold ornaments tied onto a simple chocolate ribbon.

Then tuck ornaments into glass compotes filled with pine cones for the perfect mantel display.

Jingle bell season is almost upon us and soon the packages will be tied with bows and placed underneath the Christmas tree.

Have fun this season and remember that....

.....decking the halls with gold and silver is sure to make your holiday decorating shine.
