Mid-Century Lighting for Modern Decor

Mid Century Decor

In the last decade Mid-Century decor has enjoyed a major resurgence in popularity, and the style is still going strong. However there's a fine line between honoring the design of the 1950's and 60's and feeling like you live on the set of Mad Men!

Just as SF GirlbyBay combines a bentwood pendant with mixed industrial dining room, and as For Me For You accents an eclectic living room with a slim floor lamp, incorporating Mid-Century inspired lighting into your space is a great way to create the effect without going overboard.

Modern Interior Design

To get the midcentury lighting look, seek out materials like the ceramic table lamp as seen on Style by Emily Henderson. Lampshades in colors other than white—for example linen or cocoa—inject a retro sensibility. As for shapes and silhouettes, try an arc floor lamp, a turned wood table lamp, or a Sputnik chandelier (also spotted on Style by Emily Henderson).

The clean and versatile lines for which midcentury design is revered will ensure that your new lighting will slip easily and effortlessly into your existing decor!

Lighting Ideas

1. An end table lamp combination is a hallmark of midcentury style.

2. Paneled shades like the one on this double shade table lamp were common in the 1950's and 60's.

3. This walnut table lamp features a classic pairing of dark wood with a linen shade.

4. The space-age styling of this tiered pendant lamp reflects the time period's fascination with space travel and technology.

5. The silhouette of this arc lamp is one of the most recognizable midcentury lighting shapes.

White Lighting

White Lighting

White lighting is always crisp and clean whether you take it in a contemporary or traditional direction. An easy and inexpensive way to introduce white into your lighting scheme is by simply adding white lamp shades to entryway, chandelier or bedroom lighting.

The Zhush is a great source for beautiful room images and there were ample shots of white lighting...enough to be the inspiration for this post! Consider white lighting as a counterpoint to a dark space like the image above or as a compliment to a sunny and brightly designed space.

White Table Lamps

White table lamps are always stylish when in an urn or gourd shape. The wide variety of shapes possible within ceramics will always make table lamp visually interesting and mini works of art.

Consider white coral as a lamp base in a summer home or take an old, plain wooden lamp base and whitewash it for a distressed seaside look.

White Chandeliers

Ceiling and pendant lights are also chic in white. The obvious choice is to install white lights in a kitchen. There is no question that white in a kitchen is a clean and sanitary look. I’m mad for the white milk glass chandelier above. It’s both modern and traditional at the same time. Can you say two for one? The basic drum shade in white would be a great way to start slowly. They don’t break the bank and are design simplicity at its best. There is a reason most lamp shades are white...white lighting is timeless and here to stay.

Creating the Perfect Mirror Gallery Wall

 Living-Room-Gold-Mirror-Gallery-Wall

A beautiful way to create a feature wall is by putting up a gallery collection. While personal photos and artwork are usually the first go-to for this, a mirrored gallery wall is an interesting way to bring whimsy and light to your wall space.

From streamlined elegance to funky eclectic, these images from House will inspire you to create your very own perfect mirror gallery wall.

 Entry-Frameless-Mirror-Gallery-Wall-Ideas-Design

This entryway features a stunning gallery of romantic, frameless mirror styles. The feminine, vintage look of this gallery wall also serves to bring in outdoor light through reflection, adding a wonderful glow to the entryway.

Because frame-less mirrors are so simple, you can combine many shapes and sizes, even overloading with the quantity and packing your walls with gorgeous mirrors.

Bathroom-Eclectic-Mirror-Gallery-Wall-Ideas

People often forget to design their bathrooms! This super fun, eclectic gallery wall creates the perfect backdrop to the tub. The gallery wall is funky but still romantic and girly, and dresses up what would be an otherwise typical and bland bathroom.

Hall-Antique-Mirror-Sconce-Gallery-Wall-Ideas

To call the above a gallery wall is a tiny bit of a stretch, but it is a wall hanging collection so I chose to add it to the mix for variation.

These antique mirror wall sconces, that hold real candles, are a cool way to mix mirrors with lighting. Keep them aligned for a more modern approach, or stagger the heights for a "collected" feel.

Bedroom-Wicker-Mirror-Gallery-Wall-Ideas-Design

This playful gallery wall perfectly balances Mid-Century simplicity with whimsy. The consistent wicker material allows you to mix shapes freely and still have a consistent look.

Take this gallery wall one step further by adding a DIY twist, try swapping out one or two of the standard mirrors for convex mirrors to add dimension to the look.

Floor-Mirror-Gallery-Wall-Layered-Design

If you have the space, why not take your mirrored gallery wall down to the floor! Stacking floor mirrors can make a room grow in size and appear so much brighter.

Layer cohesive floor mirrors in a space where there is not a risk of them toppling over, or secure them from behind. Leaning, layered floor mirrors give off a casual, laid-back vibe.

What kind of mirrored gallery wall do you like best?

Modern Gray Living Room

The modern gray living room does not have to be a cold and austere space. I fell in love with this room for several reasons and think it’s a perfect room to replicate. Of course the blog, A Perfect Gray, is the ideal spot to find images of chic gray interiors which is where I was when I stumbled upon this beauty.

I like that while the room is modern, it’s still warm and comfortable. The lines of the sofa are sleek but the upholstery is warm. To counter the cool glass coffee table, the designer has introduced the small wooden stool. The mixture of textures is genius. Another nice juxtaposition is the earthy, woven sisal rug below the warmer woven textile carpet.

Metals play an important role too. The brass base of the coffee table is visually carried up the wall by the introduction of the amazing brass table lamp. I don’t think there is a more divine lighting specimen than what we see here. Not only is it totally on point for the space, I would also love that look as my bedroom lighting style. While I can’t see where the other lighting sources come from, I bet there are some type of distinctive wall lights or pretty sconces near the bookcase to the left. It’s a fab look with a simple palette...bon chance.

In this dining room from Domino Magazine above, they pared the space down to blue and white with a bit of black and gray.

A black pendant light above a white dining table with white dining chairs will always produce a chic look. The blue and ivory patterned rug anchor the space for family and friends to gather. Top the table with a neutral marble bowl and add some art to the space — I opted for a a primary color abstract print to bring a few additional colors into the space.

Using Foyer Lighting to Brighten your Spring Home

$

Spring has finally come and it seemed like the cold winter days would never leave! Spring is all about a rebirth and renewal of your abode and lighting is one of the easiest ways to breathe freshness back into your welcoming foyer.

The foyer of your home can often be forgotten as it is where guests enter and exit your home and often times is treated more as a corridor rather than a room. Foyer lighting is especially important because it can be for safety, illumination, but still bring a presence to your foyer that may have been missing. This season, take a look at how it can brighten your spring home using chandeliers, pendants and even wall sconces for a fresh take to your interiors.

Foyer Lighting

Determine what type of statement your foyer lighting should make:

The first impression into your home is a lasting one, so ensure the foyer lighting you choose works beautifully with your interiors. If your front entrance opens up to a grand or monumental stair like this one by Lorraine G. Vale, then having an equally large and eye-catching chandelier could be just the statement you’re looking for.

There is foyer lighting for high and low ceilings to create enough illumination to brighten a multi-story space or a low ceiling fixture could be just enough for a more intimate entrance. Did you know that lighting is one of the most affordable upgrades you can make to your interiors during the spring?

Take a look at your foyer and determine what type of new statement your entrance can make.

Foyer Design

Contemporary chandeliers that take a break from traditional crystal:

While many homeowners love the twinkle and glamour that traditional crystal chandeliers evoke, many feel the traditional style lighting fixture doesn’t fit their modern home. The beauty of today’s foyer lighting is the ability to choose from ultra-modern fixtures that are abstract and artistic to classically traditional to fit every homeowners taste, like these fixtures in this home by Hendel Homes.

The Possini Euro design below from Lamps Plus is the perfect example of a sophisticated foyer lighting fixture that walks the line between glamorous with a contemporary edge! The chrome finish and metal construction pendant light is a break from the normal sparkling individual glass/crystal pieces, but still gives a shimmering effect in your entryway. Ideal for a smaller foyer or grouped into multiple arrangements in a larger foyer, the eighteen halogen bulbs are sure to illuminate any home with a gorgeous glow.

Modern Chandelier

Possini Euro Design 18-Light Curly Ribbon Pendant

Compliment your architectural ceiling with gorgeous foyer lighting:

One of the features that you often forget about in your foyer is the ceiling! Architectural ceilings span from very rustic to ornately detailed and foyer lighting can highlight these features beautifully like this modern variety from Peter Zimmerman Architects.

Choose lighting that keeps in the design style of the architectural features. There are so many contemporary lights that work beautifully in minimalistic interiors, while reclaimed and exposed filament lighting look gorgeous in a more rustic setting.

Complimenting your architectural setting can set the mood for guests the moment they enter your home!

Modern Foyer

The next time you rush through your foyer on to the other rooms of your home, look up! You may realize that some of the best ways to welcome and say goodbye to your guests rests in the ability of your foyer lighting to illuminate the way.

Use these inspiring ideas to awaken your entryway with light and show off the architectural details of your home.

Lighting Styles

Artcraft On the Spot Black Floor LampMulti-Color Glass 5-Arm Floor Lamp

Adults aren't the only ones who need work space in the home... Here's some ideas for lighting up a stylish work space for kids....

While table lamps let you really shine a light on things, they also take up a lot of real estate on the tabletop. If you’re dealing with a small area, or using a single surface for a pair of worker bees, consider a floor lamp for at least one seat.

The Artcraft On the Spot Floor Lamp, with metal sphere and adjustable gooseneck has both a thin profile and a ‘50s feel, making it practically and style savvy. The Multi-Color Glass Five-Arm Floor Lamp is tons of fun, and prevents arguments over who gets to shine the light on what, since there are plenty to go around.

Animal Sconce

Kidsplace Rocket 10 1/2" Wide Brushed SteelHibou White Porcelain Owl Accent LampRed Twitter Bird Contemporary Accent Lamp

Incorporate a light fixture as part of your decor theme. This kids work space, designed by Susanna Vento and Samuli Niskanen features a DIY trestle leg desk and glossy pigeon sconce with bright orange cord.

Similar options include the Kidsplace Rocket, a brushed steel mini pendant that would look adorable above the desk of a budding astronaut, and even cuter as a trio. The Hibou Owl Accent Lamp, crafted from white porcelain is illuminated from within the belly of the bird, is a style that works well into tendon. The Twitter Bird Contemporary Accent Lamp is a cheerful addition to a kid’s desk or guest bedroom. Imagine it on a bedside table against wallpaper with birds in modern black silhouettes.

Pendant Lighting

Currey and Company Rooke 10" Wide Red Pendant LightPossini Euro White Inside 8" Wide Red Mini Pendant LightPop Collection Green Glass 15" Wide Pendant

Both of these work areas start with a white ground, then add a bit of color. Brightly hued pendants are a bold contrast against white walls, especially when there are such high ceilings.

The Currey and Company Rooke Pendant Light, surprisingly crafted out of terra-cotta, would bring a bold splash of red into a room. The Possini Euro Red Mini Pendant Light is an excellent option for small spaces, or, line up three in a row. The length of red wire only makes it better. The Pop Collection Pendant, which works as a flushmount fixture too, is a more refined piece made from glass, so better to hang above a teen’s desk, preferably one who doesn’t toss a ball while studying.

Colorful Task Lights

On the left, charming birds alight behind a red task lamp that sits on a table with legs covered in florals. On the left, furniture maker Tim Leveson created a an extra fun workspace in his daughters’ playroom, with a classic black task lamp and Marimekko oilcloth-topped table.

Task lamps come in a number of styles, including quite contemporary, like the Mighty Bright LUX Dome LED Desk Lamp of solid steel, which will last an estimated 50,000 hours. The Koncept Gen 3 Equo Daylight LED Desk Lamp is also energy efficient and incredibly sleek, not just in looks but in functionality: slide your finger along the strip to dim gradually, or touch anywhere on the strip to jump directly to any brightness. For a more traditional take, opt for a metal Clamp-On Desk Lamp. Great for hobbies, this one includes a main bulb for general lighting and a circular ring fluorescent bulb to provide bright light for close-up work or reading.

Outdoor Sconce

Heirloom Wire Cage Polished Nickel Wall SconceIndustrial Chrome Finish 11 3/4" High Outdoor Wall LightAverill Park 10 1/2" High Bronze Outdoor Wall Light

North Carolina interior designer Lynn-Anne Bruns incorporates flea-market finds into her children’s rooms. Here, a collection of green bottles add color on the ledge above the wall-mounted desk. In keeping with the desk’s small space efficiency and vintage aesthetic, a caged sconce provides direct downlight.

Similar industrial styles include the shiny Heirloom Wire Cage Polished Nickel Wall Sconce with carbon filament bulb, and outdoor sconces, like the Industrial Chrome Finish Wall Light with white frosted glass, and the Averill Park Bronze Wall Light with seedy glass and Edison bulb.

Track Lighting

Photographer and graphic designer, Anne Helgesson smartly installed track lighting in her daughter’s bedroom, above the long horizontal work space, along with a pair of pendants for additional illumination. Not only do track lights keep the irk surface clear, they meld with the room’s modern aesthetic.

Lightolier Track Light Systems offer excellent contemporary designs, with die cast lights in white finishes. The Low Profile Par 20 Track Light has a bezel shade and Lightolier Classic White Cylinder Track Light uses mini-cylinder lights with a matte finish.

Kitchen Design

Do you ever look at any of the spaces in your home and think it could use a refresh? Sure you do, it happens to everyone, and the same thing can happen with a kitchen too. Though most of the details in a kitchen are fixed from the cabinets to the countertops, there is one accessory that can go a long way to update the space: the bar stool.

If yours are looking tired or you’re craving a new look, it doesn't take much to change it up! Here are three different styles to inspire a change for Spring! Swap out your existing seating with contemporary bar stools to introduce a modern vibe. Look for stools with angular clean lines or ones that mix materials like acrylic and chrome.

Contemporary Bar Stools

Get that modern edge in your kitchen with cool chrome finishes in smooth tubular bases like the Adjustable Height White and Black Bar Stool or H2 Adjustable Height Counter or White Bar Stool, or instead consider the angled edges found in the Zuo Modern Darwen Black 24" High Counter Stool. Leather is always a chic yet durable choice; get the look with the Faustino White Bycast Leather Bar Stool or Omega Adjustable Black and Chrome Counter or Bar Stool.

Rustic Kitchen Design

The eco friendly appeal of rustic, reclaimed, and weathered wood has taken over the design world by storm. In the past few years, more and more are calling for products with organic appeal and wood will always satisfy. A kitchen is a place where so many surfaces are cooler from the stone countertops to the metal appliances, pulls and faucets to the tile backsplash. In those circumstances, add welcome contrast in any style kitchen from cottage to contemporary with the warmth of wood counter height stools.

Wood Bar Stools

Find variegated wood tones in these sleek Balboa Teak and Brass Stool and whitewashed tones in the Harper Stone Wash Counter Stool. Mix your finishes with a black and wood Morella Square Bar Stoolor a round metal and wood Jaden Natural Wood Counter Stool.

Colorful Design

Color lifts the spirits and will instantly cheer a neutral kitchen. Since it’s the place where you start your day, consider making it that much brighter with colorful counter height stools in a shade that makes you smile.

Colorful Bar Stools

Go green with a leather Hillsdale Counter Stool and embrace a cherry red with these Tolix lookalike Red Counter Stool or the Crimson Counter Stool. Make it sunny with a Yellow Microfiber Swivel Counter Stool or opt for a bold blue Scooper Adjustable Bar or Counter Stool. Any hue you choose make it bright and fun!

How To Choose the Perfect Table Lamp

Perfect Table Lamp

I recently re-designed the office space at the gatehouse...otherwise known as the great lighting quest....

....or how to choose the perfect table lamp.

It wasn't easy.

I had so much neutral going on and I knew that I needed to bring in some color with the lamps on the cabinet behind the desk.

I had the perfect lamps in my mind....I knew exactly what I wanted.

I knew the style and the color and the style of the base....but the challenge was....

....I couldn't find the right lamps anywhere.

So I decided to create my own.

It was so easy.

I started on the Lamps Plus site where I can design my own lighting in three easy steps! First, I selected the type of product I wanted, which in this case was a table lamp.

I found a the ideal base in glossy white with a decidedly modern edge.

The lines are contemporary and I knew the white lacquered finish would work perfectly in the office space.

how-to-choose-the-perfect-table-lamp

Next, I chose the pattern and the color of the shade.

I knew this graphic scroll pattern would work with the glossy white lamp base and really provide a pop of color against all the neutral in the office space.

When choosing a pattern like this...you don't have to pair your color with white.

You can choose any color combination that fits your space.

The last step in the process was to choose the trim.

I chose white to emphasize the graphic pattern and coordinate with the base.

That's it!

You can design any color combination or pair a different shade with a different base.

For example, here's another pattern option with the same color combination.

I only changed the pattern....everything else is the same.

I love the graphic lines of this shade with the white base.

And here's the same base again with a completely new look.

I chose a different color combination with a different pattern.

The combinations and styles are endless!

Color Plus Table Lamp

Here's the final lamp I selected looking right at home on the cabinet in the office.

I'm so happy with that brilliant vivid pink in a sea of neutral.

But my favorite part is that I designed it myself....

....and completely made it my own!

Brighten Up for Spring with Sunny Yellow Decor!

Sunny Yellow Decor

With Spring upon us it's the perfect time to brighten up your home decor! You don't need to put in a lot of effort to update your decor, just let a color like yellow do the work for you.

Even something as simple as a painted yellow chest of drawers (spotted on Design*Sponge) brings a remarkable degree of cheer to a space. Yellow also lends itself well to easy graphic applications, as seen on this painted wall panel via Lamps Plus, or in a latticed wall treatment, also from Lamps Plus.

Spring Home Syle

When decorating with yellow, don't be shy! A large piece like this yellow sofa on My Scandinavian Home demands serious attention, while Creamy Life's yellow door and entryway bench says 'Welcome home' loud and clear! Even if you never light a fire in your fireplace, you can create warmth if you paint it yellow as on Indulgy.

For a quick jolt of yellow, Designspiration shows how a coat of paint on moulding goes a long way. And for the easiest yellow decor update of all, open your windows and let the sun shine in on some yellow home textiles!

Yellow Home Furnishings1. The faceted surface of this yellow table lamp offers a global, handwrought sensibility.

2. A yellow throw pillow gets even punchier with the addition of a fun graphic pattern.

3. A yellow ceramic stool lends its sunny style to indoor or outdoor spaces.

4. Add dimension to an entryway or powder room with the space-reflecting powers of a yellow mirror.

5. A modern shape makes this cheerful yellow sofa surprisingly versatile.

Floral Inspired Interior Decor

Floral Decor

Any style interior can incorporate floral inspired decor as long as you want to infuse a space with life. The Zhush blog has an explosion of floral themed images that make me extremely ready for spring.

Floral patterns have been a popular theme in interiors for centuries, so the look is timeless but need not be fussy. From 17th century tapestries to Andy Warhol prints, flowers make us think of the wonder and beauty found within nature.

Floral Inspired Interiors

I usually say to go sparingly when it comes to a design scheme you have not yet tried, however, florals can be done to excess if you know what you are doing. I like to think that if something works in nature, it probably works in the home.

Gardens tend to have a profusion of various flowers so it’s probably fine to mix a floral ceramic bedside lamp with floral pillows and bedding. Just make sure you keep the floral style consistent...don’t mix 1960 pop style flowers with classic English florals.

Decorative Floral Accessories

In addition to floral themed rooms, there are subtle ways with incorporate flowers. One way is to simply display floral china or recover a single chair or ottoman in a floral fabric.

An inexpensive step would be to replace a monochromatic shade with a floral lamp shades in a living room or bedroom. I also love the stealth way to use a floral pattern as seen in the green sofa above. So, whether classic or contemporary, floral decor is a design mainstay yet shows people you are not afraid to take risks.

1. This Embroidered Floral Brushed Steel Swag Chandelier begs to brighten up a breakfast room.

2. The Ice Blue Floral Porcelain Vase Table Lamp is classic and I would use it in a traditional bedroom or cheerfully preppy living room.

3. A bohemian floral look can be achieved with the Santa Maria Desert Flower Modern Chair.

4. Spice up a teen’s bedroom with this Persimmon Floral Drum Lamp Shade. Whether you use it on a table lamp or swing arm light, the pop of color will bring back the1960s in a good way.

5. I love the Poppies Floral Cotton Throw Pillow. It’s grandma’s bedroom but in such a good way. Think Palm Springs Granny Chic.

6. The Loloi Sunshine Black Area Rug is a sophisticated floral pattern that would look great in a more modern foyer or cozy family room.

Creating the Perfect Bohemian Garden

 Bohemian-Garden-Dining-Lounging-Outdoor-Design

Whether or not your style screams 'bohemian', we can all appreciate the whimsical beauty that a bohemian garden exudes. If you're just looking to create a temporary outdoor space for the warmer months, or a more permanent setup to enjoy year round, here are some tips and tricks.

This beautiful image round up from Architecture Art Design helps illustrate how to create the perfect bohemian garden in your own backyard.

Color:

 Pink-Turquoise-Outdoor-Bohemian-Garden-Design

 Bright-Colors-Bohemian-Garden-Outdoor-Colors

Blending colors with gusto is a surefire earmark of a bohemian garden. Anything goes as long as they all have the same saturation, all bright, all faded etc. Sticking to this will unify the space rather than cause it to appear haphazard and confusing.

Once you have wrapped your head around the multitude of colors, try mixing pattern as well. Colorful decorative pillows is a great place to get started. The more comfortable you get experimenting, the more bohemian your space can become.

My Tip: Start slow and start muted. Bring together a few pieces with muted, complimentary colors and build from there.

Inside Furniture Outdoors:

 Indoor-Furniture-Lounge-Outdoors-Bohemian-Garden

 Bohemian-Garden-Outdoor-Design-Rugs-Pillows

What I love about a bohemian garden is that it always seems to be a beautiful collection of valuable, antique pieces strewn across the lawn. Whether you bring out actual antique pieces for a day party or you find outdoor-safe reproductions, using inside furniture outdoors has a bohemian spirit or nonchalance and carefreeness.

My Tip: Shop funky lounge chairs to add some personality in your outdoor space.

Hanging Eclectic Lighting:

Outdoor-Bohemian-Garden-Lighting-Pendants-Eclectic

 Bohemian-Garden-Outdoor-Lighting-Moroccan-Pendants

When creating your perfect bohemian garden, you can't simply settle for a few temporary candles. Take the time to install and hang outdoor light fixtures. Moroccan pendants, Midcentury chandeliers and glass globes all help to finish that perfect bohemian garden look, while serving to take your space from day to night.

My Tip: Make sure you are using outdoor lighting, or you may risk damage. If you find a great vintage light fixture at a flea market, take it to a local shop and ask them if it is suitable for outdoors, or if they can rewire it for outdoors.

Decorating with Mirrors

Decorating Your Home

I have a mirror addiction.

From new to vintage to a growing collection of old hand mirrors picked up on my flea market jaunts, I just can’t get enough.

Some of my favorite tips and tricks for making mirrors reflect your personality …

Staircase Design

1)    Reflect Light

Stylish wall mirrors can brighten a room by bouncing light around. Consider placing one directly across from a window for maximum reflection.

Leaning Mirror

2)    Size Matters

A huge mirror can stand alone as a statement piece of art like this stunning one reflecting the bed by Sarah Richardson Design.

Collections of smaller mirrors can work equally well if grouped together and can be customized with a can of vibrant spray paint like Dimples and Tangles did with her wall of emerald green.

Colorful Mirrors

3)    Frames

Let your mirror choice reflect your personal style. It’s fun to juxtapose a vintage mirror over a modern console table or a sleek, chrome mirror over an antique settee. Don’t overlook the clean lines of frameless mirrors.

Entryway Style

4)    Don’t Forget the Entry

Entries are the perfect place for a last minute hair and makeup check before you jauntily walk out the front door. Don’t be afraid to mix colors like Amanda Nisbet does with this sculptural white mirror paired with a sleek ebony table.

Mirrored Chest

5)    Not just for walls

Consider a mirrored chest of drawers as a glam nightstand or a mirrored buffet to add sparkle to dinner parties.

How will you choose to reflect your personality with mirrors?

Floor Lamp Ideas

There are many instances where you might have several lighting options or very limited options, like with small spaces... Either way, floor lamps add light and style to any space like in this pretty modern space found on Decor8 Blog.

I particularly think that using them in places where they aren't typically used makes for an interesting design. For example, are you the type of person who needs every inch of desk space? Your office is a great place for an unexpected floor lamp. Floor lamps seem to be most commonly used in reading nooks or living spaces, but they are also fun in an entryway or even a bedroom.

Choosing the Perfect Counter Stools for your Home Style

Seating your family at the counter as you prepare a delicious meal or entertaining friends on game day in your kitchen is always enjoyable. In recent years the kitchen has become more of a communal space that includes conversing, eating and taking part in the culinary experience of the cook.

Bar stools and counter height stools are an important element to consider when planning your kitchen area. Depending on your lifestyle and decorative style, choosing the perfect counter stool doesn’t have to be such a challenge. Use these ideas to pick chairs that truly reflect you and you home’s hospitality.

Your Home Style

Assessing your decor style when choosing counter height stools:

There are so many great styles of stools to choose from. Remember when bar stools used to be hard, round, and only came in a few colors? Long gone are those days and now stools are just as comfortable as your formal dining chairs or they can resemble a rustic mountain home like these stools from Wiley Design as you can see below.

Decide if you want your stools to mimic the casual or formal style of your kitchen. Remember to look at the impact your kitchen has on the rest of your interiors. For open floor plan homes try and choose chairs that mimic the coloring in your adjacent rooms countertop, flooring, and any textiles in furniture or window treatments.

Modern Kitchen

Adding casual style to your kitchen counter with rattan counter stools:

For many homes that are transitional style or have an eclectic mix of traditional and modern accents, it’s nice to add texture to your kitchen counter. These stylish rattan counter stools from Lamps Plus marry the best of both the natural fiber world with the modern. The natural rattan and Havana bycast leather blend beautifully in your interiors and come in a seat height of 26”. The rattan wrapped back makes it durable yet still light enough to easily pull out from the counter.

Connecting your seating to your lifestyle:

Every home is different and so should your choice of bar stool seating. If you entertain frequently and have a large kitchen consider high back upholstered chairs that will remain comfortable for guests. While if your home has children and teenagers and your kitchen is always a fast-paced room, opt for simplified seating with durable surfaces and skip the upholstery!

Remember to consider the weight of the chairs for moving in and out to protect your kitchen wall from being scratched and helping your guest at the same time.

Industrial Style

Choosing the perfect counter stools can be challenging but using the tips should give you a head start.

Remember to measure your countertop height from the floor to the top of the counter. Use this measurement to ensure your barstool seat height is approx. 10”-12” below the top of the countertop.

Measurement differ depending on the style of stool but use this as a general guideline. These stools from Koo de Kir above don’t have upholstery so measuring the seat height can be easier. If all else fails, sample them in your home to ensure a perfect height fit.

You will love how you just added a new seating area in your kitchen that you and your guests will love.

Industrial Pendant Lighting in the Kitchen

Industrial pendant lights, which come in a variety of styles, from bold dome pendants in matte black or the shiniest chrome, to caged examples with a more plucked from the factory feel, are actually quite versatile. They can look just right in a cottage-y kitchen, add an element of funk to a classic suburban kitchen, and a bit of edge to a galley kitchen in the city. We pulled together six kitchens, all with different styles of industrial pendant lights.

White Kitchen

Jessica Helgerson, an interior designer based in Portland, Oregon, is known for her clean white aesthetic with vintage touches.

Helgerson uses a few industrial-style elements in this kitchen, including Toledo drafting stools from the 1940s, which echo the color of the wood floor, and a pair of polished chrome pendants hanging from a breadboard ceiling.

For similar lighting looks, try the Possini Euro Arlo Chrome Pendant Light, which has a true dome shape and link chain, the Quoizel Keaton Polished Chrome Mini Pendant, with glass shade, and Emery Silver Finish Rod Hung Mini Pendant Chandelier with a curvier silhouette.

Modern Kitchen

In this black and white Scandinavian kitchen, sleek lines are married with on-trend industrial-inspired elements. Black stained wood cabinetry, black quartz countertop and black gooseneck facet contrast sharply with the backsplash of glossy white tiles with beveled edges. And above, a series of bare bulbs are suspended by wire from a rod stretched across the length of the countertop.

The Europa GE Clear Bulb Brushed Nickel Multi Light Pendant (currently not available) offers similarly-shaped bare bulbs, in shiny sockets, and the Europa 1910 Edison Bulb Bronze Multi Light Pendant uses a more vintage style Edison light bulb.

Classic Kitchen

The pair of dome pendants with dramatic wire cages and yellow cords turn this classic kitchen by Historical Concepts into a distinctive one. Quite possibly vintage pieces sprayed white, the color keeps things from looking to busy above the sleek black countertop.

Caged lighting comes in various styles, like the brushed metal full cage look of the Metal Cage Brushed Nickel Industrial Pendant Light, the half milky glass, half cage style of the Possini Euro Industrial Open Cage Glass Pendant Light, and Franklin Park White Glass Pendant Light which has a Victorian feel.

Kitchen Lab Design

This charming kitchen, designed by Chicago-based Rebekah Zaveloff, is littered with lighting, from the sconces over the wood framed windows, the semi-flush mounts, and the matte black industrial style pendants. The black accents enhance the black grout of the subway tiled walls and echo the black cabinetry of the furniture-like island.

Similar lighting options include the Possini Euro Enzo Black Pendant Light, the Kichler Olde Bronze Fresnel Lens Pendant Light, which is a a rubbed bronze style with textured glass, and the Parker Place Mini Pendant Light if you’re looking for something more petite.

Urban Kitchen

In this city flat designed by London-base firm Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi, tight quarters are maximized for full use, with knives and utensils on the walls, along with a gallery of black and white photography. A crude plain metal mini cage pendant hangs in the center of the room, its utilitarian feel echoing that of the steel tools and appliances.

For a similar effect, the Feiss Urban Renewal Bronze Industrial Pendant, which has an elongated silhouette that works best with  high ceilings, the Brewery Bronze Mini Pendant, which has a standout finish that would contrast nicely against crisp white tile, and the Bourret One Light Cage Pendant, a cage pennant with a curvy shape and Edison bulb.

Cornwall Kitchen

This Cornwall kitchen, designed by British interiors photographer Paul Massey, is rustic in the best way, with painted white surfaces, an old whitewashed china cabinet, glossy enamel appliances, worn wood counters, and beat up pendant lighting.

You can get distinctive worn metal lighting looks with the Currey and Company Fenchurch Oyster Pendant, which has an interesting limed oak type of finish, the Earthshine Wrought Iron Dome Pendant Light, which has a Moroccan flavor in its lines, and the Raleigh Old Silver LED Pendant, which would like right at home in a kitchen like this one.
