Decorating with Driftwood

Driftwood-Jewelry-Hooks-Interior-Design-Decor

Adding pieces of driftwood, either small or large, brings a natural, warm and rustic touch to any interior space. It is a great way to blend the interior with the exterior and soften harder, more formal spaces.  Whether you are looking to take on a DIY project or you want a ready-made piece, these driftwood design ideas are a beautiful, natural addition to any space.

Let's look at different ways to decorate with driftwood throughout your home with the help of lovely images from Architecture Art Design.

Driftwood-Mirrors-Floor-Wall-Natural-Interior-Design

Wood-framed mirrors are a gorgeous focal point for any room in the house. Larger solid planks make up a bold leaning floor mirror, while a play on a starburst mirror in driftwood is rustic and chic.

Because of the natural material, these mirrors can also be used outside to enhance any outdoor space.

Driftwood-Lighting-Chandelier-Candles-Interior-Design

Without much work, driftwood planks can turn into beautiful lighting designs. Hanging Edison bulbs illuminate an untouched driftwood plank to, looking quite similar to other rustic dining room chandelier.

On the right, cutting a single plank into smaller pieces and digging out a small hole turns this natural material into the perfect candle holder.  Cluster the candles around the house for romantic evening lighting with an outdoorsy feel.

Driftwood-Hanging-Planter-Floral-Arrangements-Design

It seems instinctive to mix driftwood with live plants, creating an organic floral display.  Raw, knotty branches are wall mounted and adorned with glass bubbles filled with air plants. Air plants are extremely low maintenance, and the addition of glass holders add a bit of sparkle and modernity to the look.

Adding smaller, upright pieces of driftwood to floral arrangements for a centerpiece create a lovely juxtaposition between soft and hard and take after a wild, raw feel.

How will you decorate with driftwood?

Celebrity Interiors: Giuliana and Bill Rancic

Giuliana and Bill Rancic

I think it’s fun to look at celebrity interiors and get inspired for my own home. Giuliana and Bill Rancic have an extremely tasteful home and worth trying to emulate if you are a fan of traditional, crisp spaces.

Traditional Home magazine did a fantastic spread on their home and I thought it was an fun space to replicate as the interiors are timeless yet up-to-date. It’s also nice to see great care given to stylish lighting throughout the home!

Giuliana Rancic's House

I love how fresh this house feels. Although some of the walls are covered in rich papers, the brightly painted moldings in white keeps things light. Additionally, many of the large scale pieces of furniture are upholstered in white or natural linens. Fear not, though, pops of blue keeps things light and playful.

Dining Room Design

When it comes to lighting in the house, they have chosen to include a wide variety of styles. From the elegant mirrored sconces in the living room to the metal and wood chandelier in the breakfast room, variety is clearly the spice of life. Remember, you don't need to match all of your lighting in either shape or finish, but do try to keep the style consistent.

The Rancic home uses updated traditional lighting throughout...

Traditional Interior Decor

1. The Currey and Company Fitzjames Lantern Chandelier is similar to the open, cage look of the ceiling light found in the living room.

2. Like the breakfast room design? Why not include the Powell Wood and Metal Side Chair?

3. Kitchen lighting can also be large scale like the Currey and Company Hannah White Chandelier.

4. Simple dining room chairs like the Zuo Dogpatch Beige Accent Chair are great for a Southern California vibe.

5. Just like the blue poofs in the family room, the angelo:HOME Duncan Small Parisian Teal Blue Cube Ottoman will add just the right amount of pizzazz.

6. A tufted sofa is timeless and the Carolyn Tufted French Sofa is quite similar to the one found in Giuliana’s living room.

Icons Collection Sweepstakes Week – Meet Christopher Kennedy

As part of our Icons Collection designer sweepstakes week we are sitting down with Christopher Kennedy and getting to know him better. We’ll find out what the inspiration was behind the Christopher Kennedy Icons Lighting Collection design and Christopher’s favorite design rule he likes to break.

The “Icons Collection” is comprised of an elite number of designers asked to design a shade pattern that is unique and available exclusively at Lamps Plus for a limited time.

Each designer we have chosen is a true “Icon” in their own style. From eclectic to vintage inspired designs, each designer brings high end design, at an everyday value to Lamps Plus customers.

Icons Collection Sweepstakes Week – Meet Christopher Kennedy

What sparked your interest in becoming an interior designer?
I've dreamed, and drawn, design since as long as I can remember. I wanted to be an architect since I was seven or eight years old, and started drawing floor plans not long after.  My dad gave me books on Frank Lloyd Wright about that same time.  I received my professional degree in architecture, and after a brief stint in business, got back to my roots in design.

What are a few of your favorite textiles or materials?
I love all materials and textures! But I especially love beautiful walnut wood, gleaming terrazzo floors, solid brass finishes, and cozy fabrics.

What is the one design resource you can’t live without?
My imagination.

What qualities do you admire in a room?
I admire rooms that are dramatic but restful at the same time.  I think our built environments should inspire us; that our rooms should help us to be the best we can be.  I love creating a bedroom that inspires someone when they open their eyes in the morning, or a living room that embraces them after a long day at work.  At the same time that I believe our rooms should be vibrant and interesting, I want them to be comfortable and warm.  It's a difficult balance to achieve, and it's that balance that I admire.

the Christopher Kennedy Icons Lighting Collection

If you could be a piece of furniture or object, what would it be?
A fabulous statement lamp, for sure! Preferably a vintage one.

What design rule do you like to break?
I like to have fun with “formal" dining rooms -- so few people use them anymore that I believe in re-purposing in a way that makes them useful on a daily basis.

What was your inspiration for the Icons collection design?
I was swimming in an "infinity" pool in Palm Springs, where the water drips over the edge into spaces unseen.  I began thinking about the infinite nature of the universe and the amazing nature of the Cosmic Wheel.  So I turned the infinity symbol into a simple but striking pattern.

As part of our Icons Collection designer sweepstakes week we are sitting down with Kate Albrecht from Mr. Kate and getting to know her better. We’ll find out what the inspiration was behind the Mr. Kate Icons Lighting Collection design and Kate’s favorite design rule she likes to break.

Icons Collection Sweepstakes Week – Meet Mr. Kate
What sparked your interest in interior design?
I was always interested in decorating since I was little, I used to spend hours rearranging toys on my shelves and color coding my books. More recently I've been sparked by how interior design makes people feel, it is the ultimate mood lifter to live in a beautiful space.

What are a few of your favorite textiles or materials?
Linen is the ultimate in rustic elegance and I also love sparkle in anything, I'm a sucker for crystal and metallics.

What is the one design resource you can’t live without?
The flea market! I love browsing for inspiration and knowledge. I've learned so much from talking to flea market vendors about the antiques or finds they're offering. I love a thing with a story.

What qualities do you admire in a room?
Something surprising that is delightful in its uncanny-ness that expressed the personality of the person(s) inhabiting the space. Rooms should be a decorative, functional and alive.

Mr. Kate Icons Lighting Collection
If you could be a piece of furniture or object, what would it be?
Ahhh that's so hard! I would change every day! Can I be a shape-shifter? If I had to choose it would some fantastic wall clock so at least I could move and tick all day.

What design rule do you like to break?
Every single one! I hate rules, they restrict creativity and make people feel like they are failing in an area that should only be a celebration. Design should be an expression of your inner self and everyone is unique so rules can't apply. If you like it and it makes you feel good, it's all good.

What was your inspiration for the Icons collection design?
I love to hand draw patterns because wavy lines are more interesting and calming to me than mechanical straight lines. I drew this pattern to mimic a tribal feel that could fit in with any design style, depending on your choice of color. I was inspired by how simple shapes like lines and circles when repeated and paired together create a complex yet organic look.

Outdoor Lighting for Outdoor Entertaining

Outdoor Lighting

Summer is just around the corner, and brings with it a chance to fire up the barbecue and eat under the stars! When the sun goes down, proper outdoor lighting is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Try multiple strings of party lights for a quick and easy outdoor lighting solution; they can span the entire patio as on Sweet Thing Blog or be suspended from an oversized umbrella like this image from Lamps Plus.

 String Lights

To take your outdoor lighting to the next level, combine strands of lights with other sources of illumination. My Paradissi illustrates the impact of candles on a dining table, while an arrangement of tiki torches sets the scene for dining al fresco on Lamps Plus.

An arbor provides the perfect place to affix a hanging lantern like in the image from Domestically Speaking.

Finally, a chandelier hanging from a tree on Bohemian Homes casts a romantic glow on an intimate evening for two. And no matter what combination of outdoor lighting you use, add a few citronella candles to the mix. You'll not only light up the night but also keep it mosquito free.

Outdoor Lighting Ideas

1. The tiki torch is classic for summer entertaining. This one features a solar powered LED to eliminate the mess of fuel and the risk of fire!

2. Create subtle boundaries around your outdoor dining area by surrounding it with several recessed well lights.

3. Easy to hang and appropriate for any style of decor, a string of white paper lanterns evokes an instant party vibe!

4. For a more modern look, seek out clean lines like the ones in Jonathan Adler's glass table lamp.

5. The shape of this bronze lantern has a summery, nautical feel, while the seeded glass provides a diffuse glow.

6. Mimic the magic of starlight with a perforated hanging lantern.

Upgrade Your Kitchen Style With Under Cabinet Lighting

Under Cabinet Lights

Under cabinet lighting is essential to kitchen design and functionality, plus it adds a layer of lighting that can increase sophistication and drama to one of the most used room in the house. Lonny Magazine had some fantastic kitchen images that featured a wide array of under cabinet lights that capture high-end design at its best.

Under Cabinet Puck Lights

While there are as many kitchen styles as there are kitchens in the world, under cabinet illumination works with all designs. One contemporary lighting look is the use of under cabinet puck lights.

Puck lights are like mini spot lights that are ideal for prep areas and make kitchens look like chic Hollywood sets when lit. Puck lights can fit nicely under cabinets or even within shelves if you have an open shelving system instead of traditional cabinets.

Under Cabinet Light Bars

General under cabinet lighting can also be achieved by installing light bars or LED tape lights. Bars, tapes and strips create a more uniform light and are the more traditional route to take. One thing I really like about using the tape lights is that you are able fit a seamless stream of light into tight spots and around corners.

Remember to consider the type of backsplash in your kitchen when buying lights. Ask yourself what type of reflection lights will create on till or stone or will the walls absorb the light?

Energy Efficient Lighting

Regardless of which style light you ultimately use, there are always energy efficient lighting options. No longer do you need to be stuck with dull fluorescent lights that look dated and dreary. Under cabinet lights are now a stylish new additional to the kitchen becoming a design accessory, no longer a functional must-have.

As part of our Icons Collection designer sweepstakes week we are sitting down with Tobi Fairely and getting to know her better. We’ll find out what the inspiration was behind the Tobi Fairly Icons Lighting Collection design and her favorite design rule she likes to break.

Icons Collection Sweepstakes Week - Meet Tobi Fairly

What sparked your interest in becoming an interior designer?
My mother has an amazing eye for color and scale, and she instilled so much of her creative gift in me just by cultivating an always-lovely and inviting environment for our family and our guests, so I was constantly surrounded by color and design.

What are a few of your favorite textiles or materials?
I’m crazy for fabrics from Duralee, Kravet, Schumacher, and more. I love to start on a project by going into my workroom and just working with those patterns and colors and a vision starts to come together. And of course I love paint – it’s such a great way to change the look and feel of a space. I have 10 go-to colors with Sherwin-Williams that make up my favorite palette.

What is the one design resource you can’t live without?
That’s a tough one. It isn’t really about one company, necessarily, but I would say again that it’s all about fabrics and textiles. They really tell the story of the room – from the upholstery to the window coverings to the lamp shades. Fabrics make the room pop!

What qualities do you admire in a room?
I love a room that really shows the personality of the family living in it. That is so key. I really believe that the best rooms resonate with both the creative vision of the designer as well as the authenticity of those whose lives will unfold in the home.

 Tobi Fairley Icons Collection Lighting

If you could be a piece of furniture or object, what would it be?
Upholstery, no doubt! It’s where comfort and rest become a launch pad for creative and innovative ideas.

What design rule do you like to break?
The one thing that always surprises people is that I select the paint colors last because I want the color story to be told by the fabrics and accessories. The paint on the walls should be a complement to the rest of what is happening in the room.

What was your inspiration for the Icons collection design?
I really like the classics when it comes to design motifs, but then giving them a more modern twist. I took inspiration from the trellis work on vintage bamboo furniture, and then made it a little bolder and more updated.

Beach Chic

Let’s go down the shore... That’s Jersey speak for heading to the beach and there’s nothing better on a hot summer day. Since we’re not all lucky enough to have a water view, we can do the next best thing and bring the beach chic look inside and as a part of our home decor.

Shades of Blue

1)    Water

Nothing screams beach more than cool shades of blues and greens. Whether you commit to turquoise walls or a cobalt sofa, or instead opt to scatter a few green glass fishing buoys on a coffee table, these hues work well.

Organic Style

2)    Sand

Bring in the feeling of sand underfoot with a nubby sisal rug, wide plank floors, exposed ceiling beams or bamboo window shades.

Rustic Interiors

3)    Texture

A weathered wood dining table, chippy paint on an old trunk, and a wicker chair brought inside are all fun ways to add dimension and texture.

Casual Dining

4)    Casual

Forget formality and go for a laid back, prop your feet up feel with a huge ottoman, baskets piled high with beach reads, or a collection of faded quilts for a chilly night.

Paint floors white, bring in mismatched chairs around the dining table, add a stylish coastal chandelier and invite friends over for a casual clam bake.

Home Furnishings

1.    A weathered clock in the shape of a porthole equals instant art.
2.    The simplicity of this whale line drawing is simple and chic.
3.    I love the sculptural quality of the coral table lamp (actual lamp in round up currently unavailable).
4.    Jute underfoot as a stylish rug is the color of sand.
5.    This weathered wood coffee table mimics the look of driftwood.
6.    A few sea life pillows liven up a sofa and I love the pop of red.
7.    This shell-framed mirror would look equally amazing in a powder room, bedroom or mudroom.
8.    Add a wicker chair to a living room for a relaxed, casual feel.
9.    Baskets add texture and flip flop storage.
10. Prop up your feet in nautical style on a fun pouf.

Here’s to surf, sand and sun … Indoors!

Design Pop: White Mirrors

White Mirrors

While we head into Spring your interiors may need a design pop. White mirrors can certainly add that punch of design pizzazz, and work in every room in the house.

The House of Turquoise blog always has fresh and cheerful images that capture living with bright colors and happy decor. The great thing is that white mirrors can improve any look, whether it be your bathroom, bedroom, kids room or hall.

Decorative Mirrors

1. Cooper Classics Lawson White Wall Mirror 2. Feiss Shiera Gloss White Wall Mirror

Ornately shaped mirrors add visual interest as can be seen in these images above. Whether you go Neo Rococo or Neo Moorish, why not have a frame be as stylish as what you see looking back at you?

Living Room Mirrors

3. Wyatt White Washed Beveled Framed Wall Mirror 4. Brodax Square White Lacquered Wall Mirror

The traditional square or rectangular mirror can have an update appearance when embellished with geometric shapes or finished with an interesting paint finish or texture. An inexpensive way to add this design accessory would be to simply paint-out a darker wood mirror with white paint.

Don’t forget to sand, prime and add several coats of white paint. I really love white mirrors paired with white table lamps or sconces with white shades especially when up against deeper toned painted or wallpapered walls.

Round Mirrors

5. Winter White Round Brezza Wall Mirror

Similar techniques that can be done to the square mirror can be achieved with a round mirror as well. Round mirrors make a great design juxtaposition to square rooms and walls, adding a more feminine aesthetic. Regardless of shape, the white mirror is a simple way to brighten up your walls as spring begins to unfold.

Using Wall Lights to Bring Spring Ideas into your Interiors

Spring is the perfect time of year to start thinking of new ways to bring a renewed spirit into our homes. Whether you are thinking of adding a fresh coat of paint to a tired-looking wall or you’re trying to brighten up a dark hallway, wall lights can be the perfect way to refresh your home.

This season take a look at how simple lighting ideas can bring spring ideas and a new sense of revitalization to your home.

Spring Ideas

Organic influences to your lighting:

It’s hard to believe but natural elements such as fruits, vegetables, foliage and textural materials can be a great inspiration for pendants and wall lights. This artichoke pendant lamp in this master bedroom from Bagnato Architecture lights up this dark palette room with a warm amber glow. While inner gold wall sconces flank each side of the bed to give a subtle nod to sophistication and warmth.

This lighting is subtle but can bring out a new feeling to your dull bedroom.

Bring nature into your wall lighting sconces:

One of the great ideas about Spring is the way organic elements such as leaves, flowers, vines and other foliage inspired decor can be brought into your interiors. The Leaf and Vine Pocket ADA Compliant Pocket Wall Sconce by Lamps Plus uses a gorgeous bronze finish and amber rimmed glass to bring the outdoors on to your walls with light. The half-bell light is great for areas where you need more light, but want to make a decorative statement.

Wall Sconce

Bathrooms, hallways, flanking a fireplace mantel on either side and in a foyer or home office would make great areas to illuminate with this organic lamp.

Focal Point

Create a focal point with artisan crafted lighting:

One of the benefits of Spring is taking advantage of handmade and artisan-made decor. Lighting is one of these decorative elements that creates a big impact, especially in wall lights.

This bathroom by Platinum Series Homes features a wall sconce that becomes the focal point of this lovely bathroom. Many homeowners love to create their own lighting with DIY lighting kits or enjoy taking their favorite nature inspiration and finding similar inspired fixtures to match their decor. Either way Spring lighting can create a focal point in any room that it graces.

Bathroom Design

This Spring remember that decorating your home doesn’t have to mean an entire room remodel. Instead bring Spring elements into your home with wall lighting that refreshes your walls and gives a natural appeal to your decor.

This Spring get inspired by the beauty of nature and then illuminate your interiors with it!

Incorporating Crystal Table Lamps Into the Bedroom

Bedroom Design

This is the bedroom of Houston area interior designer and blogger, Amanda Carol. Carol, who has moved around the country, and abroad, many times, is well-versed at assembling a beautiful bedroom with optimal functionality. She re-upholstered her headboard in a velvet suede, painted the walls a creamy neutral, and made herself a pretty, pale blue duvet. Mismatched mirrored nightstands flank the bed, atop which sit crystal table lamps, which add more shine and keep things airy. A clear glass vase, coppery-y picture frame, and mirrored jewelry dish complete the vignette.

You can pull together an almost identical look with these pieces:

Keep clutter to a minimum by putting art on the wall. This Vintage Girl Wall Art features a ladylike silhouette atop newsprint, framed in black. The Findlay Mirrored 3-Drawer Tall Chest is tailored but still feminine, with plenty of storage space. Top with the Vienna Full Spectrum Crystal Urn Table Lamp, which we love for it’s unique shape and narrow profile, along with an Octagonal Mirrored Tray for odds and ends.

Purple Decor

Amanda Nisbet is a high profile interior designer based in New York City who loves color and pattern. Although this bedroom is quite neutral, Nisbet incorporates purple, chartreuse, and even pink accessories, to make it a standout. Other elements, like the stacked block crystal table lamp with purple-trimmed shade, and the tri-level brass side table, add shimmer and shine.

To create this look for yourself:

Start with neutral bedding, and then add the Caper Tiered Square Glass Antique Brass Side Table. The open configuration avoids blockiness but still allows for plenty or room to store books and such. The Vienna Full Spectrum Crystal Cube Table Lamp adds geometric interest without bulk. For ambiance and a spot of shimmery color, we love the Jubilee Fine Fragranced Plum Orchid Candle. Finally, if artwork seems daunting, you can opt for a patterned rug to bring in color, texture, and fun. The Pave 1238 Olive Branch Contemporary Area Rug achieves the same effect as the artwork Nisbet hung on the wall.

Stylish Bedroom

Like Amanda Carol, Mel, the Australian interior designer and blogger behind Georgica Pond Interiors chose soft blue as the main color for her master bedroom, but paired it with white for a crisper feel. (She is a huge fan of America’s East Coast cottage style.) She had the headboard custom made. The nightstand looks like a vintage piece painted white, though we aren’t certain. Mel spruced up the plain white shade of the classic crystal ball lamp with a blue ribbon that’s actually a bra-strap elastic! A silver clock and faceted mirror add the requisite shine.

Coordinate similar pieces for a dreamy blue and white bedroom:

Begin with a substantial piece that makes a statement and has tons of drawers, the Regency Ivory Lacquer Accent Chest. With that chest as the base, opt for a larger mirror. The Gold Orb Round Wall Mirror is an interesting shape, and the gold detailing brings out the handles on the chest. Don’t be afraid to mix metals! Add the Voyager Picture Frame Bulova Alarm Clock; we love it’s two-in-one functionality. Finally, the Quad Stacked Crystal Table Lamp adds a feminine touch.

Domaine Home

We recently had the privilege of providing some stylish lighting fixtures Katherine's newly renovated office. We also go to pick her brain a little and ask her all the serious questions about interior design.

What was the inspiration for the office?

I wanted something really neutral with some European accents, and overall I wanted it to feel classic. Initially, I pulled a few inspiration images off of Pinterest, and then worked with the Domaine Home team to fine-tune the aesthetic.

What comes first for you, style or function?

Both : )

What were the key issues for the space and how were they resolved?

A lot of what I had, had been moved from office to office as we’ve grown over the years. Some of it felt trendy and dated and didn’t fit our new space. My job has also evolved with the company, and I needed a different type of workspace to accommodate all of the things I do here, from one-on-one meetings to brainstorming with 3 or 4 team members over a table of documents or photos.

Office Design

In your opinion, how important is technology in an office environment?

Very! I actually had a flat screen TV installed that plays E! entertainment on mute, because I thrive in an ADD type of environment where there is a lot going on. I need constant stimulation — and it helps me keep up to date on pop culture! It’s also essential to me to have a large monitor for viewing art, and my iPhone is practically glued to me.

You choose a very elegant brass wall sconce for your makeover.  What drew you to that piece?

I’ve always been drawn to brass. When I look back at photos of my childhood homes, we had a lot of brass hardware and accessories, and I guess I’ve carried that with me. It feels very rich and classic.

We have can lighting, so to make the room feel a little more finished, we added sconces and a great pendant lamp that is plugged into one of the can outlets. It makes it feel a little more homey.

In most office spaces, storage always seems to be an issue. How do you stay organized and productive?

I have a white filing cabinet at one side of my desk and a very clean looking white console behind me. I wanted them to be simple, and almost disappear, but still hold things like files, office supplies, my printer, etc.

How do you go about deciding the arrangement of different elements in your office?

I really enjoy arranging accessories at home, but for this space, the Domaine team completely took over, and I absolutely love all of the vignettes they created.

What is the one item you cannot live without in your office?

My Eames desk chair. I had a lot of back problems before investing in a good chair, so I’m really glad that I did!

Which current trend(s) did you incorporate?

I have a French bistro chair that I picked up on a trip to the flea market with the Domaine team, as well as cowhide rug that’s layered over a jute rug. Those items feel very fresh and current to me.

What do you predict will be the next “hot” trend?

I guess we’ll all just have to read DomaineHome.com to find out :)

Ok, we’re all friends here, what is the biggest design mistake most people make in their office, and how can they correct it?

I think the biggest mistake is not taking into account what the rest of the office looks like. I wanted my own office to feel like it flows with the rest of the floor, not like I tried to create an entirely different environment. It’s personal, but it fits right in with everything else.

Thanks Katherine and congrats on the stylish new office space!
